SPEAR (XSX) Review

Developed with a clear eye for creativity and presentation, SPEAR is one of those games that immediately grabs your attention thanks to its striking visual style. Playing on Xbox Series X, I was genuinely taken aback by just how sharp and stylish the game looks. It’s vibrant, clean, and full of visual flair, but beneath that surface sits a surprisingly thoughtful experience that plays with the idea of games existing inside games. From the outset, SPEAR makes it clear that it wants you to think as much as it wants you to play.

However, this isn’t just a clever narrative gimmick. The game used its “inside the code” bring into the light level design and puzzle structure, constantly reminding you that rules can be bent (or outright broken) if you understand how the system plays.

SPEAR is a Game Within a Game

The core concept of SPEAR revolves around the idea that you’re navigating a digital world that’s more than aware of itself. There are frequent nods to code, developers, and the systems holding everything together, and these references are woven neatly into the environment rather than simply dropped in as off-the-cuff banter. Furthermore, this meta approach gives the game a playful personality, making exploration feel purposeful as you slowly uncover how the world operates.

However, this isn’t just a clever narrative gimmick. The game uses its “inside the code” premise to inform level design and puzzle structure, constantly nudging you to think differently about how the world functions and what rules are actually in play.

Moreover, exploration is quietly encouraged through hidden chests scattered around the maps, each holding equipable cosmetic fineries. I’ve so far picked up a top hat, a developer’s beard, and a bow tie (and I must say, my dude looks rather dapper) – all entirely unnecessary, but more than welcome. However, these little extras fit the self-aware tone nicely and reward poking around corners you might otherwise ignore, giving exploration a light-hearted payoff.

SPEAR-Tastic Puzzle Design

As the name suggests, your spear is the star of the show. Almost every puzzle revolves around using it in smart and often unexpected ways. You’ll throw it, aim it (with a cool slomo effect when jumping), activate switches, manipulate the environment, and occasionally use it to help with level traversal. Furthermore, new ideas are introduced at a steady pace, keeping things interesting without overwhelming you.

However, some puzzles can lean toward the fiddly side, especially when timing or positioning needs to be just right. There were moments where the solution was clear, but execution still took a few tries. Thankfully, checkpoints are in abundance, which keeps frustration to a minimum.

Style Over Speed

Visually, SPEAR is easily one of the strongest indie puzzles games I’ve played recently. Clean lines, bold colors, and smooth animations give the whole experience a polished feel. Furthermore, the environments often shift and react in subtle ways, reinforcing the idea that you’re operating inside a living system rather than a static world.

The audio design complements this nicely, staying understated and letting the visuals do most of the talking. Sound effects are crisp, giving each SPEAR throw and interaction a satisfying sense of weight.

Summary

SPEAR is a clever, visually striking puzzle game that knows exactly what it wants to be. Is spear-focused mechanics, playful meta ideas, and sharp presentation all work together to create something memorable. However, it’s slower, puzzle-heavy nature won’t suit everyone.

For players who enjoy thoughtful problem-solving and games that aren’t afraid to be a little self-aware, SPEAR is well worth your time.

SPEAR is available now on the Xbox Store for the Series S|X, and on Steam.
