Bunny Cubed (XSX) Review

Bunny Cubed is the latest low-cost Sokoban title published by EastAsiaSoft, following in the footsteps of Rivenaar’s Grove, Skater’s Solstice, Soko Penguin, Soko Frog, The Traveler’s Path, and Shivering Stone. However, it most closely resembles Fluffy Milo right down to the menu selection screen.

It takes less than thirty minutes to clear all 60 stages as the difficulty remains low with easy to understand gameplay. In fact, the game just starts without any direction or adjustable options. Like any Sokoban game, you simply need to push the blocks onto the correct tiles to progress to the next stage. There is no undo but there is an option to instantly restart at the press of a button. Since there is no timer or move counter, the experience remains calming and casual throughout.

This is simply a plain Sokoban game, nothing you have not played a bunch of times before. However, the one minor difference comes from the continuous control. Unlike other games in the genre, holding the d-pad or analog stick in any direction causes the bunny to constantly move in that direction instead of one tile at a time. It sounds like a minor detail on paper but actually makes a huge difference in practice. This allows for smoother and more immediate gameplay.  The downside, though, is that it is easy to overshoot your target, resulting in accidental block pushes/restarts as it can be a bit touchy. To me, even with the loose mistakes, I still prefer this style of control instead of using rapid fire taps to make my way around each stage.

My other complaint comes from the slightly isometric perspective. It probably would have been visually easier to understand if the camera was top-down but it is still playable by all means. The classical soundtrack is fine and transitions from one tune to the next whenever it wants. This is a five-dollar game so presentation expectations can only be so high.

There isn’t much else to say about Bunny Cubed. You push a few blocks. Move onto the next stage. Then rinse and repeat until all stages are cleared, earning all 1,000 gamerscore along the way. Like most other Sokoban games, there is no replay value, no secrets to find, or unlockable upgrades. It is a plain gameplay experience best played for those wanting to easily and quickly increase their Gamerscore at a low cost.

Another low-cost Sokoban game published by EastAsiaSoft, Bunny Cubed doesn’t offer much in terms of gameplay or replay value but it is another easy way to boost your Gamerscore.
