Mutant Football League 2 (XSX) Review

Developed by Digital Dreams Entertainment, Mutant Football League 2 is a loud, brash, and bloody unapologetically silly love letter to arcade sports games of yesteryear. Booting it up on my Series X instantly sent me spiraling back to my childhood memories of playing the original Mutant League Football on the Atari Jaguar – a time when sports games weren’t afraid to be ridiculous, violent and downright unfair. Thankfully, and perhaps most importantly, this isn’t another turn-based experiment like previously encountered. Instead, Mutant League Football 2 sticks to real-time chaos, and it’s all the better for it.

Football, But Not As You Know It

At its core, Mutant League Football 2 is an 8-on-8 arcade-style football game, but calling it “football” feels almost misleading. This is a sport where players explode, referees are fair game, and the pitch itself is actively trying to kill you. However, beneath the gore and gallows humor lies a surprisingly solid foundation. The controls are responsive, the pacing is brisk, and matches flow well, even with complete carnage and mayhem erupting every few seconds.

Furthermore, the game does a great job of balancing accessibility with depth. You can jump in for a quick match and have a great time without learning a playbook thicker than a phone directory. However, those who want to dig deeper will find plenty of tactical options, from play selection to player management, that add genuine strategic weight to the madness.

Monsters and Mayhem Combine for Mutant Football League 2

One of the standout features is the sheer variety on offer. With over 35 teams to choose from – including the grotesque parodies of real-world franchises – there’s a constant sense of novelty to enjoy. Mutated super-humans, skeletal deadheads, orcs, robots – they’re all here, and each brings their own distinct flavor to the field. Moreover, player cards and free agency options allow you to mix and match historic players. or even create an entirely original team if you fancy forging your own monstrous legacy.

Progression is where Mutant League Football 2 really opens up. Through mutations, armor upgrades, and ludicrous weapons like chainsaws and shotguns, you can steadily turn your squad into an unstoppable freakshow. However, it never feels overwhelming. Systems are sensibly layered, and experimentation is actively encouraged. If you want to juice your players with questionable enhancements mid-game, the game happily allows you to lean into that chaos.

Franchise Mode and DIY Doom

Franchise mode, dubbed Dynasty Supreme, is where Mutant Football 2 stretches its legs. Starting from the bottom and climbing the leagues over multiple seasons feels genuinely rewarding. Drafting rookies, training them up, and slowly shaping a dominant roster scratches that long-term progression itch nicely. Furthermore, the addition of Mayhem Bowls gives each season a clear goal, which really bolsters momentum over extended play sessions.

The Doom Field Designer is yet another excellent inclusion. Designing your own stadium (complete with buzzsaws, fire geysers, blizzards, and other environmental hazards) adds and extra layer of strategy and personality. However, it’s also just incredibly satisfying watching the opposition get chewed up by traps you deliberately placed for them. It’s cruel, yes, but entirely on-point.

Summary

Mutant Football League 2 knows exactly what it is and fully commits to it. It’s loud, kooky, violent, and endlessly entertaining – but it’s also far more polished and thoughtfully designed then its premise might suggest. However, if you’re looking for realism or subtlety, you’re pretty much in the wrong stadium.
