TGS: Revolution Controller Revealed!

The Revolution controller has been revealed…as what looks like a television remote. Expect a full Mygamer report on the Tokyo Game Show events later today.

The controller has sensors that detect even the slightest movement, from twisting and tilting to movement toward or away from the screen, which will be a primary input for games on the upcoming console. Demonstrations have already showed the controller in use as a baseball bat for a sports game and as an aiming device for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, much as a mouse is used for PC first person shooters.

A socket at one end of the controller allows additional peripherals to be plugged in. In the case of Echoes, this was an analog stick for movement with firing triggers. The design of the controller is such that it looks like the classic 8-bit NES controller when turned sideways, most likely for compatibility with the announced retro games that will be available. The wireless controller also has rumble functionality and takes regular batteries.

Nintendo expects this controller to be “Revolution”ary but that will remain to be seen. Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, said “We want to set a new interface standard for games… [t]his is an extremely exciting innovation — one that will thrill current players and entice new ones.” Nintendo has stated that this is not quite the final design, but it is close.
