The game draws inspiration from films in the style of the 2018 Korean production When You Sleep, among others.

The story in Nightmare Shift revolves around routine duties at a remote motel and dealing with unsettling guests. Gameplay is built on a walking simulator formula with puzzle-solving elements.

As the developers point out, completing Nightmare Shift takes anywhere from about 30 minutes to a few hours on average. The title offers different endings depending on the choices players make.
