Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC (XSX) Review

Published by EastAsiaSoft for five bucks, Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC is a simple top-down racing game that is nothing more than occasionally flicking the analog stick left and right while fighting the loose controls and questionable AI. This single-player digital download doesn’t have any features, or even a gimmick, making it unfortunately forgettable.

Using RT to accelerate, racing couldn’t be any simpler. There are no weapons, powerups, boosts, verticality to the track design, jumps, unlockable tracks, no parts to upgrade, and nothing to unlocking. Instead, players are limited to racing one track at a time. If you finish in one of the top spots, the next track becomes unlocked. The AI’s challenge doesn’t change overtime either and there is no variance in the track design – you just turn left or right sometimes and everything looks the same.

Besides lacking features and depth, SPEC’s other issue comes from the loose controls and magnetizing collision.  This is one of those racing games where you need to let go of the accelerator, or feather it, with each turn because drifting comes easy and automatic. At first, I was not a fan of this slippery approach but it grew on me. By the end of the first cup, I started to “get it” and could take turns like a pro. However, the slightest bumping of another vehicle causes them to stick together like magnets, negatively changing speed and turning. So it isn’t that the AI is necessarily cheap or difficult, they just get in your way and impede your progress by weirdly latching on to you.

The presentation also is justifiable of the low asking price. Even with a few camera options, none are ideal but the overhead one works best. Each track also looks and plays nearly identical than the rest, all without any vertically or jumps. There is a timer built into the user interface but it doesn’t mean anything. There is no time trial mode, and no reward/penalty for performance if you rank 3rd or higher. The soundtrack is also lower quality; the short looping tune cuts back to the beginning with an awkward transition. As each race begins, an announcer yells “go go go” which is also entirely unnecessary and annoying.

Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC feels like racing RC cars repetitively on a plain and boring track. Without any options or a gimmick, it offers nothing more than a relatively simple way to earn 1,000 gamerscore in about 40 minutes.
