World Of Warcraft

I'm totally new to WoW; bought the game last night. I know you can make multiple characters but my son and I are sharing the game (same computer). Does it matter if all of his characters are in the Horde and mine are in the Alliance? Is each character basically a different game or do they create one entire team?
Sword of the New World just went free as well if you guys are looking for free as your quantifier for good.
