Nightmare Shift (XSX) Review

Working nights sounds bad enough, but Nightmare Shift some how makes it much, much worse. The game takes the ordinary idea of working the late shift and twists it into an unsettling psychological horror experience that had me questioning every shadow and ominous hallway. Suddenly. dealing with awkward customers doesn’t seem quite so bad.

Developed by Binary Lunar, this first-person horror title follows Emma as she balances life between her apartment and a remote hotel where she works the nightshift. Things begin innocently enough before reality slowly start to unravel, creating an experience that’s far more interested in getting inside your head than simply throwing monsters at you every few minutes.

Nightmare Shift Creates Constant Unease

The motel is easily the game’s biggest strength. It’s creepy without trying too hard, with dim lighting, empty corridors and a steady steam of strange visitors creating an atmosphere that rarely lets you relax. Even the most routine jobs become stressful because you’re constantly expecting something to go horribly wrong.

Thankfully, Nightmare Shift understands that less can often be more. Instead of relying on endless jump scares, it gradually builds tension through its environments, sound design, and unsettling story. Every creaking floorboard and distant noise makes you wonder whether it’s part of the building— or something much worse.

One feature I particularly enjoyed was how the game avoids overstaying its welcome. New environments, fresh story developments, and increasingly bizarre events arrive often enough to keep things interesting without feeling repetitive. Visually, the Xbox Series X version does a solid job bringing its unsettling environments to life. The realistic style makes everything feel believable before the game gradually begins introducing increasingly disturbing moments.

The audio deserves just as much praise. Wearing headphones is almost essential, although your nerves may disagree. Every distant footstep, creak, and uncomfortable silence works together to create an atmosphere that constantly keeps you on edge. It’s the sort of game that has you checking behind you… despite knowing full well nothing is actually there. Hopefully.

Steam players have also responded positively to the atmosphere and storytelling, with many praising its ability to create genuine tension without leaning on cheap scares. A handful of players felt the slower gameplay may not suit everyone, but most agreed the unsettling journey was well worth experiencing.
