Into the Pixel at E3 ’05

Expanding on the theory that videogames are a burgeoning art form, the Into the Pixel art show at this year’s E3 displayed works of art from recent games in traditional gallery style.

Sixteen pieces of conceptual and rendered art, selected from one hundred and forty pieces submitted by professional game development studios, made up the exhibit ranging from an oil paint rendition of Kirby, to a softly-lit CG render of an abandoned subway station from Marc Ecko’s Getting Up. Into the Pixel’s panel of judges is comprised of notable figures in the games industry, such as President of Oddworld Inhabitants’ Lorne Lanning, and various academics that deal in visual studies, including the Getty Institute Collections Curator, Louis Marchesano.

This is the second year for the “celebration of the art of the video game,” an event that will most likely continue to supplement the expo’s mainstream appeal with its more artistic flair. To view and download the exhibits from both this, and last year’s show, visit http://www.intothepixel.com/
