Yesterday, Microsoft’s Peter Moore made a bold statement claiming that Halo 2 would break records by taking in $100 million in its first day. It now appears that Mr. Moore was wrong.

He was off by $25 million.

Halo 2 broke retail records yesterday by pulling in $125 million on its launch date. As of tonight, Microsoft announced that the game has sold 2.4 million units across the United States and Canada.

“EB Games had a record-breaking day as gamers across the country lined up for hours to be one of the first to get their hands on ‘Halo 2’ on November 9,” said Jeff Griffiths, president and CEO of EB Games. “The ‘Halo 2’ frenzy, anticipation and excitement felt throughout the country prove that ‘Halo 2’ has become more than a game — it’s a pop cultural phenomenon.”

GameStop proved to have similar success, selling more than half a million yesterday.

“Halo 2 has blown the roof off of any other sales day in the history of GameStop,” said Dan Dematteo, president and chief operating officer at GameStop. “In just one day, we sold more than half a million copies of Halo 2 — more than any other game in history in its first day of release. Halo 2 has become more than a pop culture phenomena — it’s become a pop culture frenzy.”

With numbers like these, it’s no wonder people called this the most anticipated game in history. If anymore records happen to be broken with this game, you can be sure MyGamer will be there to tell you about it.
