Hello,

I just quit smoking today...cold turkey. Some people say that's a bad idea, others think its the only way, but dammit, if George W. Bush can quit drinking on a whim, I can do as well if not better!!!

Anyway, if anyone can distract me with advice or whatever, it would be much appreciated.

A bit of background as to why this is really difficult for me...the last time I truly tried to quit smoking was September 10th, 2001. It was my birthday resolution (I was born on the 9th). I also worked in lower Manhattan at the time...so quitting was a wee bit difficult that week.

help...*meep*

Mike

a friend of mine went cold turkey as well, everytime she craved a cigarette she'd have a tootsie pop instead, funny stuff, the only advice I give you is pack alot of gum

The best advice I can give you is to replace it with something else. Chew gum or buy some beads to worry (you'll find you don't know what to do with your hands, so the beads are actually a really good idea).

Also, try to avoid situations in which it's natural to light up. If you did a lot of smoking in bars, don't hang out in bars, etc.

Well, the funny thing is that this is coming on the heels of a smoking ban here in NJ. All indoor public spaces (except casinos) are required to ban smoking, just like NYC.

Ah, then I advise you not to go outside. Build yourself a system of tunnels. Public tunnels.

No seriously, try to stay away from habit situations. If you would go outside on a break and have a butt, don't go outside for breaks, walk around the office and drink some water.

Also, when you're at home and you feel a craving, feed it physical activity instead of nicotine. Do twenty push-ups when you want a cigarette, and the craving will likely subside.

A friend of mine took apart a BIC pen, and used the empty shell as a placebo cigarette whenever he got cravings. He was able to ween himself off the pen when he decided he looked like an idiot... So, BAM - cold turkey by humiliation. Good luck.

Stay stopped! Take your new lease of life and renewed energy to get the best out of life and the most out of your body.

Daily activities that can be classified as exercise:
Walking
Stair climbing
Gardening
Housework
Cycling

Work out what is best for you. You can exercise in all kinds of different ways and finding something you really enjoy will help you to continue.

I heard if you get a craving you should brush your teeth. Not only will you stop smoking, but you'll end up undoing the possible yellowing of your teeth from your smoking.

I am so pissed about the ban here in NJ... I was playing pool this weekend drinking and what COULDNT SMOKE!!!! it took the fun out of it.. Ive tried the cold turkey thing, lasted a day or so..

Good luck to you..

I suppose the NJ ban was just another reason for me to stop...thanks for all the advice guys. I've actually replaced my jitteriness with shooting the basketball around at the court in my apartment complex. So, I can avoid gaining weight, improve my admittedly awful basketball "skillz" and live a few years longer than I my previous expectancy, heh.
