Amature Game Designers

This is also the 1000th thread posted on MyGamer forums!

Hey...so, i'm guessing a lot of us here want to "break in" to the game design industry. But since that is so damn hard and it often requires some show-able work of some kind, I've always thought working on a mod or an amatuer project would be a good idea. However, it can be hard to find people who want to work with you. So...consider this the official "want to be a game designer" thread.

We could try and start a project here if there are enough people interested who have compatable talents and software...others may want to come here to recruit people to work on such projects. or just shoot the breeze on what it takes to get into the industry and some tips, links, etc. that we might be able to share.

So post away!

P.S.
I personally, would be interested in starting up a project with some people. I have my degree in 2D studio art and have some experience with 3D as well...platforms (for mods) include UT2004, HL2, Morrowind, Civ4...maybe some others i cant remember.

I would love to do some character design and concept art for games. I use a combination of pencils/scanning, adobe illustrator cs2, and photoshop cs2. I have access to extremely nice facilities and pretty much unlimited capacity on my server. Count me in!

My most applicable talent would be writing, the conceptual side of things (I'm not yet learned in the ways of sound or graphics). Also can pick up scripting languages pretty quick (though I can't straight up write programs in c++ or anything like that). Mainly my experience is in RPG Maker 2000 and XP.

I've been making a somewhat anticipated game in RMXP...

Pretty much everything except for some remedial tasks, and some stuff I want to do myself, is done.

I'm in...water boy...or girl if you prefer...

Honestly, the creative aspects would be my angle...depending on our genre...

glad to hear we have some interested peeps. sounds like we have a lot of concept guys...we'll need some implementation guys too though lol.

what we could do is make a mod of an existing game and not focus on actual 3D modeling or get too heavy with scripting since it sounds like we lack basically programmers and modellers. in our mod we could use all prefab stuff and maybe work on importing some things from free databases online...just focus on a really good story with scripted events and a good, fun single player experience.

this would probably be a good way for us to get our feet wet without getting in way over our heads. its VERY easy to get carried away with a project like this and turn it into something that is impossible to finish due to anticipation running away with the team.

so... next question. what games do we all have in common that are moddable? i listed mine above.

HL, HL2, Battlefield: Vietnam is all I have right now.

Has anyone ever used that Dark Basic program to make any games? I've dabbled with it little a few years ago. Seems like it has potential for small projects.

Nope, the only things I've used that could be useful (besides drawing/sketches and writing) was Photoshop and 3D Studio Max, but that was years ago.

Ive made my own games before. and i take create in creating my school's first 3D video game. I wish i had more time to work on them though. creating sprites, models, programming, and testing takes tons of time.

I am very willing to work on a 3D game with someone. I get very bored. :inky: in fact, I found this page when searching for amateur game making teams. <You worldn't believe the porn links I got because of that word amateur lol :inky: > Anyway, not only do I KNOW DarkBasic's compiler language, but I am PROFICIENT in it. I am eager to make a simple project. I have already started a 3D tank game. Please contact me at BlckLightning35@aol.com if interested!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fire:

Nice to see you on the boards blcklightning35!!......And speaking of tanks, what was the game on Atari with the tanks in it???.....I know i come up with the strangest shit

That one where you have to shoot that other tank, but you could really just shoot them once then hit them the other 4 times once they spun out?

that's the one spuds.....Man, you are a plethora of knowledge dude....Yeah, me and my little bro would play that for hours on end when we were much younger......The tank game and Pitfall...
