HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive. The disk drive and HDD are one and the same. remember the wierd add-on for the N64, the 64DD? same idea here, only this is more comparable to the Hard Drive in your computer and it'll come built into the system instead of as an add on.

It would appear I spoke too soon. A sony rep made an announcement yesterday that the HDD will be sold standard on the PS3 and that it will in fact be able to play games out-of-box. Humanity can rest easy now.
