Over the years, I've grown less and less impressed by videogames whose story is presented primarily via cutscenes, and the like. Why? Because I've seen movies that are way better in presenting their narrative in the same way. The reason why I say a good FPS presents its story by experiencing the...

What is this preponderance of story or plotting in FPSs? To me that's like focusing your attention to the story presented by the lyrics of a song rather than listening to the music. :P A good song will tell its story in the music. A good FPS will provide its story in experiencing the game's world.

As for the current question... my quick impressions on the current gen: PS3: I can't even name you a single game for the PS3 right now. I honestly think I'm going to wait until Fumito Ueda (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus) makes a game for the PS3 before I get it. I might have to even skip MGS4...

    Question of the Day

Nah, not really. Over the years I've come to kind of resent formalized education. It's almost the same as gambling for me in the sense that I don't know what or if I'll gain anything or not from any given class (taught by a given teacher), because not all universities and teachers and courses...

So you measure the value of living things by how tastey they are, eh Spudz? :P Just as there are many aspects to be valued in the existence of living creatures, such is the same for video games. HL just happens to excel in a few areas that can't be overlooked or underestimated. Sure, there are...

    Question of the Day

Should just send a generic text message to everyone that attended. That's the hip thing to do.

    Any good movies?

Lot of good movies were shown at the Toronto film festival recently, like Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. They'll be making their way into theaters this fall. Well, maybe mostly just art house theaters.

Besides, it's cosmically wrong to complain about Gordon Freeman's character and its development (or the lack thereof if you like) and not complain about Master Chief's. Sure, maybe there's a few more details to him, and maybe more will be revealed in Halo 3, but his relationships aren't any...

Just a different approach to things, a different method. Some games will use common emotional appeals directed through the protagonist to transport you into the game's world via relationships and moral dilemmas (your Zeldas, Chrono Cross, etc). How does that work out 98% of the time? Not all...

On Half-Life: Gordon Freeman's character is basically the equivalent of the mute hero in a JRPG, only I think it's better suited in the FPS genre because of the shared perspective. The fact that we know little to nothing about him and the fact that there is a perpetual first-person perspective...

On Halo's Story: Of course Halo's story is not considered among the best examples among all of videogames. But It's my opinion that people generally place too much value in the details, the content of the story rather than how the story is conveyed--the storytelling. If you do that, then it's...

    Favorite DS game

Mario Kart DS. Why? Well, first of all, it's the best Mario Kart game so far. Just so fun and polished. Note: not taking into account online multiplayer component.

    Halo 3 coming very soon

I'm really digging the ads for it. Seen'em? The 'Believe' campaign? If not, "Halo 3 believe" on Youtube. That's how it's done.. that's how you sell a game.

Well, I wasn't exactly comparing FF7 and Star Wars. I could have replaced Star Wars with any series of games or movies that started out awesome, and then a prequel/sequel was made years later that lost a ton of the appeal and magic that made the first one(s) awesome. I hear Blue Dragon isn't...

You had to start young, Mav. That's how I got into them. Being the abstract thing that they are, when you're young, you have a greater ability of filling in the gaps. I don't know what or how it is, but the mind had a way of making everything grander and more detailed than what visual or textual...

The timing is good for waxing nostalgic. That to me implies that I wish I was young again and playing FFVII for the first time rather than the spinoff game I'm playing. :P So, the timing isn't good to me as a huge fan of FFVII because I remember when FFVII first came out, it was just one of...

First comment on this topic: Square waited too damn long to follow up on the FFVII world/franchise. And they're short one Hironobu Sakaguchi. What does all this entail? The gravity of FFVIIdom is definitely not the same as it was 8, 9, 10 years ago, so it's more than a little too late to spin...

Well, the jump/shake/skipping is nonexistent in MP3. I assume they're using some of the same kinds stability algorithms that digital camcorders use to reduce the shake effect--except in MP3's case the shake doesn't exist. The real challenge to me is to come up with a comfortable and accurate...
