The kinect can be useful and useless at some times. Its cool but it loses its novelty eventually. You also have to have the space to use it. You kind of have to shout for it to recognize you.

For purely gaming I would recommend an alienware laptop. Those can last for a couple years before they become outdated. But alienware is pretty pricey so if you don't want that really any modern laptops can run most games.

On PC all of my games come from steam. They have spectacular deals and you don't have to go out to buy a game. As for consoles I usually download my games but occasionally I may buy the disk.

I wouldn't even bother to get an HD DVD addon, most movies are bluray. I don't think the kinect is a waste of money. It has some cool features with it. It only is a waste of money when you don't have the space to use it.
