Dino Odyssey is a single screen platformer published by Ratalaika Games for $5. This breezy 30-minute romp isn’t anything you have not played before but has charm and is an easy way to boost your Gamerscore by 1,000 points.
Playing as a green dino, the only verbs are run and jump which keeps things simple. The goal is to grab three dino eggs then bring them to the nest to reach the next stage. Of course, typical hazards like spikes and water get in the way and there are environment props like vines to climb while mushrooms act as bounce pads. Then, enemies pace back and forth and will attack on sight adding a slight stealth mechanic to the gameplay. Again, it isn’t anything unique but everything is instantly understandable. Since it only takes a few seconds to clear each stage, death is never frustrating since there is almost no lost time.
The biggest complaint, although manageable, comes from the loose control. Controlling the little green dino dude is slightly slippery and jumping from vines feels a little weird, not really high enough. However, it seems the game was designed around this looser control as there are no sophisticated leaps to make and enemy placement isn’t cheesy.
Visually, the 2D pixel art is colorful and has personality. Also, I appreciate the simple approach to gameplay and stage design. Even though each of the 50 stages takes place on a single screen, all are varied despite reusing assets. The music isn’t anything great though but doesn’t have time to become annoying since the quest is over quickly and without strong challenge.
Dino Odyssey is an approachable, simple, but respectable game even though there isn’t much too it. You make a few jumps, grab some eggs, and reach the exit all without struggle. However, there is something refreshing about playing such a short, whimsical platformer that can be finished on your lunch break.
