Capcom Digital Collection (360) Review

Bang For Your Buck

Back in March 2012, Capcom released their Digital Collection – one disc that is composed of eight of their XBLA games.  Originally retailing for $40, this disc was essentially a 50% off compilation disc when it debuted.  But now that time has passed, it is possible to obtain this collection for under $20, basically 1/4th of the total cost of the content found on his disc.

Capcom is not the first company to compile and re-sell their games in one neat bundle.  Namco did it with their Museum titles and Konami has released a couple of their own compilation discs.  But the Capcom Digital Collection features 8 XBLA games that originally retailed for 800 MS Points ($10) and even threw in some extra DLC to boot. If you are looking to get the most out of your dollar, this Collection is a safe bet.

These are the games included on the disc:

–          Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

–          Final Fight: Double Impact

–          Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

–          1942: Joint Strike

–          Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

–          Flock!

–          Rocketmen: Axis of Evil and also includes the Rocketmen: It Came From Uranus expansion

–          Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3

Now if you want to get technical, Final Fight: Double Impact also includes Magic Sword.  So really this disc has 9 games on it.

The good news is, there really isn’t a “bad” game in this CollectionFlock!, Rocketmen, and Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 might have slipped under the radar when they were first released years ago but they still hold up pretty well today.  I would probably consider Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 as the highlighting title in this bundle but I am sure Street Fighter fans would argue about both HD Turbo Remixs.  Why Bionic Commando Rearmed 1 wasn’t included is a mystery though.  Perhaps their wasn’t enough space left on the disc..?

Bionic Commando

This Collection is composed of quality and at a cheap price.  There are a few noticeable negatives, however.  First, I could not find anyone playing online.  Some of these games came out as early as 2008 so finding dedicated players still playing today is tricky.  And secondly, there is no option to install the disc on the 360 harddrive.  This is understandable as it prevents piracy but it is rather annoying to constantly listen to the disc spinning madly in the disc tray.  Also, there is no option to back out to the Collection’s main menu.  Upon exiting a game, it kicks players back to the My Games section on the Xbox dashboard. It is not a make or break deal, but annoying nonetheless.

Gamestop and Amazon have started to deeply discount this compilation disc and it is well worth the asking price.  In fact, I would suggest buying two discs and giving one to your friend so you can actually have a partner to play online with.
