Cakey’s Twisted Bakery (XSX) Review

Developed by an indie team clearly intent on doing things their own way, Cakey’s Twisted Bakery is one of those games that immediately raises an eyebrow – and then raises a few more as it unfolds. On paper, the idea of baking cakes and throwing them at enemies sounds absurd, and in practice, it absolutely is. However, that absurdity is very much the point. Playing on Xbox Series X, I found myself equal parts confused, amused and oddly compelled as the game refused to explain itself and instead trusted me to figure things out the hard way.

Welcome to Cakey’s Twisted Bakery

Cakey’s Twisted Bakery wastes very little time easing you in. There are no lengthy tutorials, no helpful pop-ups, and certainly no hand-holding. You’re dropped into its strange, twisted world and expected to work things out through trial, error, and an abundance of head-scratching. However, while this approach will undoubtedly frustrate some players, it also gives the game a certain old school charm. There’s a genuine sense of discovery in learning how things work, even if that discovery sometimes comes after a few unnecessary deaths.

Furthermore, the lack of guidance makes every small success feel earning. Working out how to bake the correct cake, understanding how enemies behave, and learning how to survive encounters all come from experimentation rather than instruction. It’s refreshing in a way, even if it can feel a little unforgiving early on.

Cake-Based Combat

The core gameplay hook is as strange as it sounds. To defeat enemies, you must bake cakes and throw them at them. However, it’s not quite that simple. Each enemy has a colored health bar, and only cakes that match that color will actually damage them. Throw the wrong cake, and you’re essentially wasting precious time (and cakes), while potentially putting yourself in danger.

This mechanic forces you to think on your feet. Combat isn’t about mashing buttons or overwhelming enemies with raw power; it’s about preparation and quick decision-making. You need to identify threats, bake the correct cakes, and deliver them to progress smoothly. When it all clicks, it’s surprisingly satisfying. However, when things go wrong, it can feel chaotic and even a little punishing, especially when the game hasn’t explicitly explained why something has failed.

The Twisted Treats of Cakey’s Twisted Bakery

One area where Cakey’s Twisted Bakery truly shines is it’s enemy design. The creatures you encounter are imaginative, creepy, and often genuinely unsettling. There’s a strong contrast between the cheerful idea of baking and the nightmarish beings you’re hurling your creations at, and the contrast works incredibly well. Moreover, the designs give each encounter a distinct identity, helping the game avoid feeling visually repetitive.

The environments themselves follow a similar philosophy. They’re not especially detailed from a technical standpoint, but they ooze personality. Everything feels a little off-kilter, a little wrong – which fits the game’s tone perfectly. However, the presentation isn’t without its rough erdges, and some players may find the visuals a little basic compared to more polished indie titles.

Trial, Error, and Patience

Because the game explains so little, progression can feel uneven. Some sections flow smoothly once you understand the mechanics, while others devolve into repeated failures until something finally clicks. Furthermore, the are moments where clearer feedback would have gone a long way in reducing frustration. Knowing why something didn’t work isn’t always obvious, and that can test your patience.

Summary

Cakey’s Twisted Bakery is weird, uncompromising and unapologetically niche. It won’t appeal to everyone, and it’s refusal to guide the player will undoubtedly turn some away. However, for those willing to experiment, fail, and learn, there’s a creative and memorable experience hiding beneath the confusion.
