Bejeweled 3 (DS) Review

Busting Your Smaller Gems

A few months ago, I reviewed the XBLA version of Bejeweled 3 and the vast majority of gameplay remains unchanged in this DS version.

Everyone should know about Bejeweled’s match-3 game mechanic so there is no need to discuss further.  However, like the XBLA version, new modes have been added for this new sequel.  Modes like Butterfly, Lightning, Diamond Mine and Ice Storm introduce new way to strategize the standard diamond matching gameplay.  Each of these modes are easy to swallow in small bites but yet continuously tease players with that just-one-more-game addiction that any serious or casual player will submit to.  Quest mode also fits the gameplay well as completed challenges can unlock new rewards.

The downsides to the DS incarnation of Bejeweled 3 are the muddier graphics and slightly higher price tag.  For $15, the full XBLA version of Bejeweled 3 can be downloaded and enjoyed with high def visuals and online Leaderboards.  The DS version, however, sells for $20; that is the price of portability I suppose.  Positively, Bejeweled 3 is a standard DS title, not a 3DS title, so DS Lite owners can find a new reason to pick up the aging hardware.

Almost As Good As: the XBLA version

Also Try: Plants Vs. Zombies

Wait For It: Bejeweled 4 with real-time multiplayer
