Bouncy Bob 2 (Switch) Review

Bouncy Bob 2

The original Bouncy Bob was released in 2018 and is a terrible game. However, the developer managed to push well over 300k downloads because it literally sold for a couple pennies on the Switch eShop in the deeply discounted section. Because of that “success,” a sequel has been made but you’re better off holding onto that loose change to cover the sales tax on a drive-thru double cheeseburger.

Bouncy Bob 2 is more of the same only with some new gameplay options.  The infuriating control mechanic, in which you only control the angle of Bob’s jump at random, is always frustrating and never fun. Tower mode pits the player in one stage after another with the goal of defeating all the enemies before advancing. Besides jumping like a schmuck, the only other verb the player as access to is a sword swipe but getting close to enemies on purpose is nearly impossible.  Arena is the PvP multiplayer option in which the goal is to be the last man standing. Swarm is a horde mode that challenges the player to protect a statue from incoming enemies. The environment constantly expands so enemies storm the player from more outlets but is never fun like the rest of the game. Blender mode is a fake Fruit Ninja where the player bounces around a juicer and tries to slice randomly flying fruit. This mode is also frustrating as it is random at best and the player can only slice through fruit once. Volleyball probably has the most potential, as players swipe a ball back and forth over a net, but the inaccurate controls, attacks, and floaty physics quickly becomes tedious. There are also technical problems, like frequent and long load times, and my Pro Controller was unable to sync.

Volleyball is probably the most fun but still suffers from the same bad control

Bob’s sequel is based entirely around a sole gameplay mechanic – jumping that is determined by a swaying meter.  And when jumping is the worse part about this game, only frustration, hatred, and rage quitting is guaranteed.

Not As Good As: playing pretty much anything else

Better Than: the original by a hair

Wait For It: the game to drop in price to $0.01 again
