Toy Soldiers: War Chest Preview

At first glance, Toy Soldiers: War Chest might look similar to the previous games in the series, but this upcoming game has many new features and improvements that separate it from the previous titles. First of all, it’s the first Toy Soldiers game that is not a Microsoft exclusive, and it will get a release on the PlayStation 4, as well as the Xbox One and Windows PC.

War Chest is getting released this year, and the Signal Studios developed game will be published by Ubisoft. Which is actually a good thing, as many cool characters are arriving to the Toy Soldiers franchise now, so don’t be shocked when you see Ezio from Assassin’s Creed in the game!

Gameplay

Toy Soldiers: War Chest is going to be very similar to the previous games in the series, but the gameplay appears to be more polished, and dynamic than ever before. The tower defense gameplay has dramatically improved, and you will be able to upgrade both the armor, fire rate and damage of the turrets in War Chest. The goal is the same, so you will still attempt to prevent the enemy from getting to the toybox.

If what they say is true, then the AI has seen significant improvements as well, so it’s going to be much tougher than it was in the past. If you do something like destroy a bridge, they will quickly find another path to the toybox. Some of the units are capable of healing nearby units, making gameplay more dynamic as enemy units aren’t only attacking your turrets.

In Toy Soldiers: War Chest you will not get killstreaks, but there is a bar that fills up as you kill enemy units, and once it’s full you can use a special ability. What is this special ability we speak of? Well, when the bar reaches a certain amount you can spawn a hero unit, or put a barrage down to block your enemy.

Your army is customizable, allowing you to choose which turrets and barrages to use during a battle. There are four armies you can choose from, and if you get the Hall of Fame Edition then you will have double that. In War Chest you are also allowed to modify the hero’s arsenal, and as you get further in the game you can unlock more customization options.

Standard and Hall of Fame Edition

As mentioned above, the Standard version only comes with four armies, and the Hall of Fame Edition comes with eight. The PC version of War Chest is all digital, but if you purchase the disc for PS4 or Xbox One you will be purchasing the Hall of Fame Edition. It’s probably better to purchase the disc for your PS4 or Xbox One, if you want to preserve storage on your console.

The standard version of Toy Soldiers: War Chest comes with Dark Side, Starbright, Phantom and Kaiser armies. If you get the Hall of Fame Edition you’re going to get even cooler armies based on well-known characters in the gaming universe. Duke and Cobra Commander are two from G.I. Joe. Ezio Auditore da Firenze from Assassin’s Creed is another one, and the final is He-Man from Masters of the Universe. If you’re not a fan of them all, then just purchase the character you like separately, they actually allow you to do so if you purchased the standard version.

Conclusion

Toy Soldiers: War Chest looks like an exciting release, and it’s great to finally get a Toy Soldiers game on a PlayStation console. The action/strategy game will become available on August 11, 2015, so the wait is nearly over. It’s a nice twist on the tower defense genre, and it looks like Signal Studios has made more than enough improvements to justify the purchase.

The Hall of Fame Edition can be purchased for the low price of $29.99, while the standard version will be available for only $14.99. If you want to get the standard version and just download one of the extra armies, they will be available for $4.99 each.
