Amazon.com Product Description What does the American Dream mean today? For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don?t. Beginning with the 1997 release of the original Grand Theft Auto, the GTA series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, Grand Theft Auto IV, will garner at least as much attention if not more.
Return to Liberty City. | The dream as Niko expected it. View larger. | There's always a catch. View larger. | But some skills are international. View larger. | The Plot Grand Theft Auto IV is a brand new adventure in the GTA universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko?s search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko?s well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamoring for Roman?s debt-ridden blood. Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman?s protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City. Game Environments Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for GTA IV. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in GTA IV are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cutouts, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko?s interaction with them. Gameplay Historically GTA games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in GTA IV. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay. Features Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for GTA IV: - Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
- Cell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS, snap photos, and ZiT (tag) songs that can be downloaded exclusively on Amazon.com/mp3.
- Free time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities.
- Take a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city.
- Control your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money.
Multiplayer Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer "hero." GTA has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs. Co-op challenges you and your friends with various tasks including Hangman's NOOSE where you are responsible for escorting a wanted kingpin to a safe extraction point. Freeform lets you and 15 others lose on Liberty City. Use this mode to hit up the bar and play virtual darts versus each other or head out to the streets and set up your own drag races. If you can dream it, you can do it in Freeform mode. ZiT: We'll Spot The Song For You When playing Grand Theft Auto IV, if you hear a song that you are interested in buying as an MP3, all you have to do is dial ZiT-555-0100 on your in-game mobile phone and a text message will be sent to you with the name of the artist and the title of the track. The next time you log in at the Rockstar Games Social Club, you will find 30-second previews of all the songs you have ZiT'ed while playing the game. You can add them to your basket there and click to purchase at Amazon MP3, or you can find them all at www.amazon.com/gtamusic.

Great Game by a Lazy Developer - Bad Optimization and Complex Securom issues December 5, 2008 This game will drive you mad. Because you will want to play it really badly, but ultimately wont be able to unless you jump thru many many fiery hoops.
I had to download this twice because STEAM messed up on the download, point being, they never tested it on steam.
You're likely going to get a lot of critical errors at firt, luckily after three days of frustration the user community has put together a list of recommended solutions for various errors, the list is long, and thats my point exactly, in three days people have put together a list of critical errors that is 30+ Entries strong, thats a lot of start up errors, atleast with some suggested solutions.
Once it runs, you'll be lost in the game, but not without some other problems, how annoying these are to you, depends on why you got gta. Ex. The Shadows are horrendous at times, noisy and flickering, can become distracting in an immersive moment. Lag can be heavy in multiplayer, this makes voice communication impossible. The Securom BS is insanely annoying at times, getting proper windows live accounts syncing with gamertags syncing with rockstar social club accounts syncing with steam. Seriously?
If you have a powerful rig like mine, prepare to be a little surprised at some FPS slowdowns, you'd imagine you'd be able to crank, likely not, not until some patches are released. However, you'll be able to play it, and enjoy it.
Let me be clear, the game itself is a masterpiece. Get a 360 controller for PC. Load up and its almost the same as the console.
The problem is getting it to run with the securom and optimization issues.
So ask youself, is GTA IV worth the BS before a patch is released?
Personally, i couldn't wait and I cant quit the game.
Still be warned, not all is gravy.
Don't listen to the kids December 4, 2008 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
First off, these people posting with Athlon 64 4000+'s and 8800GT's are obviously going to be complaining. The game is a beast.
If you have a Quad Core system with a 8800GT+ you will enjoy this game. If you have a Quad Core with the latest 280GTX or 4870x2 then you'll love it. It's not a poor port when the game scales with every aspect of upgrades ranging from CPU, GPU, Memory, and FSB increases.
It's as simple as that. All of these people are giving it 1 star because thier computers are underpowered for this type of game. It's an open sandbox game with a ton of stuff going on all the time. Pretty much every game ever released has always be GPU bound, this is the first CPU bound game that truly takes advantage of Quadcore processors.
I have the game, and I have a solid 1500 dollar gaming computer (Q6600, 4GB 6400C5, 280GTX, Vista 64) and I play it at 1920x1200 max ingame settings (other than traffic density, and draw distance) and the game is mind blowing.
Over the Top DRM, Bad performance, frequent crashes. December 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I Had enjoyed the Xbox 360 version of this game previous and was looking forward to the PC version for the improved graphics and potential for community made mods( mods look to be very unlikely so far). I have been extremely dissapointed with the game thus far.
The fact that it forces you to deal with SecuRom, GFW, and R*s own social club application just to play the game is annoying. After getting it installed and registering for the various accounted needed to play the game ( just single player even), I was greated with a crash to desktop seconds after launching the game for the first time. After searching the various forums I found that the cause of my troubles was that I was signed into Rockstars Social Club, and that their servers were having a problem that caused the game to crash. So I launched the game, and signed out of the social club ( you still have to leave it running in the background even if your signed out or the game won't run) and I finally was able to get the game to load and run. When I tried to set my graphic options I was met with a screen that limited several of my options. Apparently making my own choices on graphic settings is a Bad Thing(tm).
With what I could adjust in the options menu I was able to get the game to run somewhat decently. However I still had various unexplained crashes that made it next to impossible to relax and enjoy the game.
Presently I can only call this game a source of frustration. If they step up and throw a patch or two at it, it might become something enjoyable. Until then I recommend staying away.
What contest in hell did I win? December 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
You have no idea the headache, anxiety and physical pain that you will go though when trying to play GTA IV on the pc. It is simply trash. For me, out of nowhere the frames - per - second will drop to unplayable levels (i.e. from 30fps to 5fps.) Textures do not load all the way, and some of the missions have frozen mid-way through. That's of course after you sign up with all these required online spyware "big brother" sites.
It's simply not worth the $50. I want my money back until they can sort this mess out (if they ever do.) What worries me is that Rockstar may be content with their Xbox and PS3 sales and not really care about their crappy PC release. Then we are stuck with this rubbish. If I don't get a working game or a refund, I'm never buying a R* product ever again.
GTA 4 for PC fails December 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
GTA 4 for PC fails. Fails dramatically. I urge consumers to stay far, far away from this game- no company should be allowed to sell a product this broken; this is especially sad considering GTA 4 is one of the huge releases this year/holiday season. Allow me to enumerate:
1 - You must log into three different programs in order to play GTA4- otherwise you will not be able to play online or even be able to SAVE YOUR GAME IN SINGLEPLAYER [!!]- SecuROM, Windows Live, and the Rockstar Social Club.
2 - Rockstar Social Club causes the game to crash on launch. This means there is effectively no multiplayer
3 - GTA4 frequently crashes, rubberbands and has other performance issues, despite the fact I have a system that surpasses the minimum requirements, up-to-date drivers, etc.
4 - The game refuses to save my custom settings- I have to remap the controls and other settings every time I launch.
5 - The game is terribly optimized- my system can run other high-end games without a hitch- CoD4, Crysis, Farcry2, and so on. However, the game REFUSES to let me turn the video settings up beyond the lowest levels. I can either play with a resolution of 800x600, or with graphics vastly inferior to my XBOX 360. GTA4 already has a host of performance issues- why won't it let me set my own graphics levels?
6 - There are plenty of standard video game port problems too- the controls and interface still feel console-y and clunky, and the HUD/menu system is glitchy.
7 - Rockstar tech support is too overwhelmed to help me; and the workarounds I've found online simply do not work for me.
Bottom line: A major dissapointment- Rockstar treats PC customers like trash, and apparently doesn't bother to test their product before release. Stay far away from GTA4 for PC.
