2 out of 5 stars great story, horrible gameplay   August 2, 2008
4 out of 12 found this review helpful

This is one of those games that makes you suffer through horrible gameplay to enjoy a great story. I spent most of the game (when I could) on foot because of the horrible driving mechanic. How difficult should it be to drive around the corner? Apparently very difficult. I've been told by friends that I shouldn't expect great driving because this isn't a driving game - I guess it's time to remove the "grand" and "auto" from the title.

2 out of 5 stars I've had nightmares that resembled this game   August 2, 2008

Walking around a city full of people who are all the same person, react the same way, tons of buildings and stores but they're actually just cardboard sets.

I cannot believe such an unfinished game was put out at such a high price on two new great high end gaming systems. Did they fire the people that worked on San Andreas? This game is empty and depressing to play, the characters are annoying morons, the controls and physics are AWFUL, the shooting is boring after 5 minutes and NOTHING HAPPENS IN THIS GAME AT ALL.

I have about 13 hours playing time clocked and a good handful of missions completed and its THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER, its pitifully dull. I was really shocked at the lack of content and wish I bought something else. Speaking of such past being able to play PS1&2 games and MGS4 there isn't anything worth looking at on the PS3, should've gotten an Xbox360, or a Wii.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing   July 30, 2008

What a dissapointment. I wasn't a big fan of the series, I only played a couple of the previous games, so I'm judging it based on a solo game, not comparing it to any others in the series.

The cover system works nicely for the most part. Switching from lock-on to free aim is smooth and very easy to do once you get the hang of the controls, and the shooting in general is nice. Damage is area specific, and the enemies movements are smooth. The area specific damage gives some strategic thought, and its cool that you can shoot the weapon out of their hands too. Melee fighting feels clunky, but works well 1 on 1, but anymore than that can get a little tedious.

Graphics are fantastic, but nonetheless have plenty of glitches, abnormal shadows, and some bad glares.

The story is lacking. It was entertaining enough to get me through to the end, but it didn't get me involved with the plot. I couldn't really connect with the characters, none of them really interested me. There were some I liked, and then there were some that I just found impossible to like: Florian, Brucie, and especially Dwayne, who the only thing he talks about is his bad childhood and time in prison. What a conversation to have while driving to a strip club.

Vehicle controls are by far the worst thing about the game. The car controls were crappy at best, with horrible turning. Expect to spin out of control frequently, especially with the higher quality cars.

Bikes were even worse. I don't like flying 20 feet in the air after going 10 MPH hitting a fence.

Motorboats and helicopters are in a league of their own. Motorboats are slow, frustrating, and can't turn for crap. And trying to sucessfully deal with the vomit-controls of the helicopter will make you sick.

A fun game, but one playthrough is enough. After that it becomes too repetitive and tiring.

4 out of 5 stars Almost flawless...   July 26, 2008

In terms of gameplay, story, characters, graphics, voice acting and most importantly fun, this game is in a class of its own. It is maybe with the exception of the Metal Gear games, THE game that could be adapted to the big screen and actually be a great movie.
So, why only 4 stars after all this? well, simply because after spending almost 100 hours playing this game to achieve a 100% game completion (this was the first time I actually managed to finish a gta game btw), I was disappointed to find out that I couldn't start a new game with all my saved stats. While roaming through this huge world may seem fun at first, it is the story missions that drive this game and make it so great and addictive. It is one small quibble about an overall fantastic game, but still one that manages to trim away from an otherwise perfect score.
Something for Rockstar to ponder about for future installments maybe?

3 out of 5 stars Slight disappointment   July 25, 2008

If this was the first GTA I've played then I would be amazed and blown away. I just kinda felt bored after a few hours with this one. I never really had that feeling of "I can't wait to see what the next mission is" like in San Andreas. Instead I was almost thinking "I wonder how annoying and boring the next mission will be."

The positives are definitely the graphics, although they're not flawless like Uncharted. Getting hit by cars is a nice addition, and breaking the glass of locked cars is fairly cool as well. But.....

Niko's cousins accent gets really annoying really fast. It seems pointless to bother having the girlfriend. The combat system is annoying and slow. Why is it that every person you pull out of a car can fight like Mike Tyson? Are this many ordinary people professional boxers who are ready to throw down when being car jacked?? The police are waaaay too aware and quick to respond. I attacked some dude on the beach in the middle of nowhere and the cops were on me in 5 seconds...in New York? Please.

Why do you have to hold X to run? That's annoying because walking is soooo painfully slow. The driving cameras are frustrating and move without you doing anything. It's very difficult to see what's ahead of you because the camera continues to default behind your trunk. Getting continuously double and triple teamed by pedestrians was cool the first few times but quickly gets old when you're constantly being chased by an angry mob for jaywalking. I got knocked down by a car, then the driver gets out and starts hitting me along with two other guys. What's that about?? New York is a rough place but give me a break.

Overall, I think I've been spoiled by playing better PS3 games. Rockstar maybe lagging a bit behind the times here. It could also be that I'm generally bored with the premise of GTA seeing how I played San Andreas until I nearly crippled my hands. Oh well, hopefully number 5 will wow me again.
