5 out of 5 stars Canon Pixma iP4500 is excellent printer   October 24, 2008
I purchased this printer to replace an old Canon i850 color inkjet printer. The old printer worked great for a few years, then stopped working properly even though I used only Canon ink cartridges. So far the iP4500 seems to print text and photos very well - actually better than the old printer. I am hoping it lasts longer than the i850.

The ink cartridges are easy to change. The ink for the iP4500 does not seem to smear after drying the way the ink used in the i850 did. The two paper trays are very useful to me. I use the bottom tray for letter paper and the top feed for photo paper. I have the software set to allow switching between the two trays when necessary - very easy to use and much nicer than the old printer. Also, the iP4500 will do duplex (front and back) printing automatically - does not require re-feeding the back side of the page.

5 out of 5 stars One Happy Granddaughter   October 24, 2008

Printer purchased for my 10 year old grandaughter after she inherited my eMac - the other members of her family have PCs. After she unsuccessfully tried to print a school assignment on one of her family's printers where she had used 'Appleworks' and unfortunately (for her and her teacher) had to complete the assignment in cursive, and because I, in California, couldn't help her, in Arizona, I decided to purchase her her very own printer.
I chose an HP for her since both her family and I all have trouble-free HP printers. This one is no exception. On my latest trip to AZ, she and I setup her printer. I had her read and follow the instructions - which she did with ease.
After two weeks of operation, it appears to be working well, she is happy, her parents and siblings are happy, her teachers are happy and I sure am. Would highly recommend this printer. It is user friendly and has features, such as the ability to do two-sided printing, that can be found on more expensive models.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Printer for the Price   October 21, 2008
I previously had a Canon iP printer and the quality of the prints was excellent so when I went to buy a new printer that was my top priority. After talking to Canon a couple of time & adjusting the parameters, I finally am getting those quality prints again. I don't know if it was because I switched platforms and am now using an IMac or not. The speed, cost and quality of the prints are top notch and I would definitely recommend this printer to anyone who can't afford the big bucks but wants good quality prints.

5 out of 5 stars CD/DVD problem solved   October 16, 2008

I just bought the Pixma iP4680, which appears to be the model replacing the iP4500. It's a bit cheaper, has basically same specs, but prints a tad slower.

Printing on CDs and DVDs is important to me, so it was with some trepidation, having read the review about limited control of the inner circle size, that I bought this unit.

But the problem is solved. Here's the fix. Don't use the CD/DVD printing software (CD-LabelPrint or Easy-PhotoPrint) that comes with the printer. I am printing directly from InDesign, and after a few trials am using a page that is 4.7222 (don't ask) inches wide by 9.125 inches high. I place my image 3.425 inches down from the top. Bingo. Total control of inner circle, outer circle, everything. You can coat your entire CD/DVD AND the insert tray with ink if you want to. Well, certain sections of the tray anyway.

I'm using WinXP. When it's time to print, click "Print" > "Setup" > "Preferences." For Media Type: choose "Printable disc (recommended)"; Paper Source automatically jumps to "Disc tray." Make other settings as desired. Whack OK a few times. Follow on-screen directions about inserting the CD/DVD tray. Hit OK again.

Great results here. Your mileage may, as they say, vary. Good luck. ;^)

5 out of 5 stars So far, just perfect!   October 14, 2008
My much loved, though wanky, Epson bit the dust during a rushed project. After reading various reviews-Consumer Reports and the Amazon reviews primarily, I purchased this printer from Amazon. Really rushed, I plugged the printer in when it arrived and it hasn't stopped since. It is very intuitive to use and very fast. I love this printer!
