Amazed...and Hooked on my Kindle November 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have never used an electronic book before and read hours of reviews before I finally decided to buy it. It's a pricey little gadget and I'm careful with my cash but I don't regret a penny.
I love the feel of paper and I was sure I wouldn't be able to get used to it but within minutes I was unaware that I was reading a screen. I even reached up to "turn" the page a few times! No eyestrain either. The screen is very sharp.
But the biggest selling point is that I no longer have to make a 50 mile round trip to the bookstore. I live in a rural area and even out here I get perfect wireless downloading from Amazon. I can get an entire book delivered to my Kindle in less than a minute! Now *that's* a doggone miracle!
It has a few design issues that hopefully will be corrected in an updated version - the page turning buttons are too large (they take up the entire sides of the device). This makes it difficult to hold and it's easy to turn a page by accident. However, you do get used to it. I also don't like that you cannot tell what page you are on (the page "numbers" are nonsensical). The battery seems to last quite a while - I read 3 books before I recharged. It's lighter than a hardbound and I like the protective cover. It's quite easy to order books - though I find that I browse Amazon on my computer first, then order the tile I want on my Kindle. It's much faster that way and saves the battery.
I'd buy it again in a heartbeat and another may end up in my husband's stocking for Christmas. It's a keeper.
If you like to read, you'll love to read on the Kindle November 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My wife is a librarian and had wanted a Kindle ever since she saw one. I looked at the Amazon site and was unimpressed, but bought it for her as her birthday present. After that, I rarely saw her without it. She was always reading it. After several months I took a closer look and asked her how the thing worked. She showed me and ten minutes later I downloaded a book so I could use it. It was incredible. My reading speed increased, I was less distracted, there was never any eyestrain, and I finished a long book [400 pages] in a week. Usually it would take me a month. I thought we could share it. My wife reluctantly agreed, but after two weeks, she informed me it was a "personal reading device" and if I liked it so much I should get my own. After what seems like 87 years of marriage, it was the first **anything** she didn't want to share! I figured that it would pay for itself after 10 books [I used the OPRAHWINFREY discount of $50]. I'm not a gadget freak, and this is no gadget. It is the best electronic device, besides a computer, I have ever used. If you read books you should at least get one in your hands for a few days and check it out. I have yet to fully explore it other than subscribe to the NYT, and I know it has a lot more going for it. My guess is that the vast majority of people who read it for a few hours, will get one asap. It's the best $330 I ever spent. Don't confuse it with an iPhone or computer. It's for print and I won't share mine either. So get your own :)
WARNING!!!! SCREEN BREAKS EASILY November 17, 2008 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have only had my Kindle one week and while trying to "hook" into the tab in the cover, I pressed too hard on the screen and it broke! I called Amazon immediately and I have to buy a new Kindle!^$#*@**#
Ugly but great November 17, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Kindle is a masterpiece of strange looking! But it is a great little device. It works perfectly, just as advertised. But it could be easier to hold if the page buttons were not so large. All in all, a great little reader.
Vacations with heavy suitcases are over!! November 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What a great electronic reader! I just finished my first new book edition of 750 pages and never had to lug a hardcover version or wait a year for the paperback! Getting the book loaded via wireless network onto my device was painless, economical, quick and very satisfying. Being able to stop my reading and come back to the spot I left next time I turned the Kindle on was fantastic and made reading this book so very easy. The only negatives are related to the way the next page/previous page bars are set up on the device. Their size and location makes it likely that you will accidentally change your page before you want to, but you do tend to make adjustments on how you hold the device pretty quickly so that the incidence of the mistake goes down after a few uses. I was also wanting to download an eight book series that I have read before and found only the first book in the series available at the Kindle bookstore. I'm hoping more books will be made available with time. All in all, I'm very happy with this gift from my wife (she has one too)and I'm looking forward to our upcoming two week vacation for more reading on my Kindle.
