We have a winner November 18, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Since the GCN version I was put off a little, but now that this game is out, we have a winner! From the moment you pick up, you really don't want to put it down. It has all the fun of the N64 version that I grew a costume to, and more. Then there is the online play which is fantastic, but you need a wireless modem, or McDonald's to play. Hands down, this is the greatest Mario Kart EVER!!! Buy one for yourself, buy one for your friend, they will love you forever, and I mean it!

The First True DS Killer Ap November 18, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Alright folks, I'm not going to waste your time describing all of the ins and outs of this title. Suffice it to say, if you've played any MarioKart title on any system out there before, and have enjoyed it, stop reading this right now and go out and get this game (and the DS to play it on if you don't already have it). This game takes everything great about the franchise and concentrates it into pure addictive fun in portable form.
For those of you who were dissapointed with the Gamecube version (speaking for myself here), fear not- the controls are much more in line with the (previously my favorite) N64 version. That is, you have the defensive tools at your disposal- holding items behind your cart to cover your rear, the 3 rotating shells make their appropriate return, the slide gives you a little "jump" action, etc. Before I got the game, I was concerned that it would be hard to pull off powerslides with the D-pad as opposed to analog control, but it is quite easy to execute them (perhaps a little too easy, as you don't start to spin out if you hold in one direction for a while). As others have stated, the bottom screen adds a whole new level of strategy as you can time your drop behind items for maximum efficacy, and see when something is coming for you, where coins are located, etc. As far as playability is concerned, everything is spot on (the GBA game was decent, but this is like night and day).
The N64 version stole much of my college education time, and this little tiny cart is likely to steal even more, post-grad. Just think- you don't even have to get out of bed to play a course or two. If only I had friends that had DS's...I guess I'll have to go make some online! Highly recommended.
A CLASSIC YOU WILL LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! November 17, 2005 1 out of 3 found this review helpful

OH MY GOSH, Nintendo really grabs you with this game. Be warned though, you'll be sucked in, you'll lose sleep playing, you'll giggle with glee finally being able to play MarioKart Online. Finally, ever since the first MarioKart release back on the SNES we are given online play- and it's about time :) There's a great mix of tracks to race here- you'll see some new ones, as well as earlier tracks from the N64, SNES and Cube Kart games that were previously released. There's just so much going on in my mind after playing this title that I don't know where to start. First off, I have wireless internet & getting MarioKart DS hooked-up took about 1 minute to get it up & running for online play. Even if you don't have a clue how to get started, Nintendo graciously guides you through the process step-by-step. It's packaged with two instruction booklets: one for the gameplay & the other for getting set-up online. Even if you don't plan on playing online (you really should though), the nintendowifi.com website lists all their wi-fi hotspots you can use to play against other human opponents (You'll see that many are located at McDonalds). The gameplay itself is simple and extremely addictive. Just like earlier versions of Mario Kart, in the DS version you choose a rider and a car- each character (Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach....etc) has different power-ups, and each car handles differently. There are also unlockable characters once you progress through the game far enough. The framerate is fluid, the animations are bright and colorful, and I've found that there is absolutely no slow-down at all. The music is your typical bouncy/happy marioKart tunes. You can choose to play online, a VS mode, battlemode, timetrial, circuit trial....there are quite a few modes to play through here so even expert "power-drifting" racers will be kept busy for a long time. Now, with the inclusion of on-line play, this game will never become tired....only your fingers. I'm just so happy to have this game, I'm almost at the point of tears...tears of joy! WooT!
