Very fun adventure (and very creative use of the DS) November 15, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just finished the game (only took 6 hours) and man was it fun!
Pro: * Intriguing plot lines and twists * Creative use of the DS as a whole * Excellent ending * Great background music
Con: * Some puzzles are confusing (remember to use everything at your disposal with your DS. Close the lid, get a reflection from the top or bottom. USE EVERYTHING!) * Some characters are not as fleshed out as I would like * Too fast (Finished in 6 hours)
Over all, I really enjoyed the game.
Most Fun Ever November 15, 2006 OK... not everyone wants to play a fast paced shoot 'em up game. Sometimes you want a slow paced game that can just be enjoyed. This is one of those games. It's not even a game, really, it's more like an interactive movie; or better yet, like an interactive BOOK (remember those!). The artwork in this game is fantastic... the music is incredible, and the story, while short, is captivating. Yes, it is "kind of" short compared to most games, but, the up-side is: YOU GET TO FINISH IT!!! Now, honestly, how often can you say THAT? If you enjoy the pace of games like Animal Crossing Wild World, you will certainly enjoy Memory Trace.
Fun Concept, But a Little Thin November 4, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Trace Memory" can be summed up as a point and click mystery with a couple of twists for the DS. You play a young girl travelling with the aunt who raised you to a mysterious island to meet your father, who you believed had died years ago. Before long, you find yourself separated from your aunt and exploring the island with a ghost who has lost his memories of his previous life.
The gameplay is pretty starightforward; you explore your surroundings on a mostly preset path with numerous puzzles scattered throughout. The graphics are prtty good with a Japanese-influenced style on the characters. Most of the puzzles utilize the DS's special features, sometimes in pretty unique ways. They can at times leave you a bit stumped, especially if you aren't familiar with everything the DS can do.
The main drawbacks of this game are its short play time and the lack of freedom to really explore. You can finish the game in just a few short hours and it's tough to miss anything the gam wants you to see. There are a few little bit of story you can skip over and supposedly playing through a second time gives you a special bonus, but chances are you won't want to play through the game more than once or twice at most. Still, it's a fun and engaging experience and you will feel pretty good about yourself when you suddenly figure out a puzzle that's been stumping you. It's good as a rental or if you can find it for below retail.
Short but Satisfying September 11, 2006 Trace Memory is reminiscent of the old PC adventure games from the mid '90's. It is the first game of its genre to grace a handheld, and the DS Stylus plays a huge role in gameplay. Puzzles in the game involve scratching off rust, turning cranks, slide puzzles, and the like.
You play as Ashley, who is one day shy of 14. Her parents have been missing for the past eleven years, during which she has been in the care of her aunt Jessica. She receives a package from her father which contains a mysterious device that more than vaguely resemble the DS itself. In the letter her father asks that she come to a mysterious island to meet him. Soon after arriving Jessica disappears and Ashley encounters the ghost of a boy, dead 57 years, who has no memories of his death. Ashley and the ghost, called 'D', then explore the island's manor to try to solve both of their questions.
This is the first hand-held game that really tests your brain (Brain Age came out a few months afterward). You'll need to memorize clues you receive and think about how to solve puzzles. Some require backtracking.
The game is lacking in action and its story is told through dialogue boxes with portraits of the characters. It is also rather short, in the range of 4-6 hours of completion time. You can play it through a second time, but the changes are minimal.
Overall, this is a good game if you need to take a break from the action or adventure titles. It won't provide a long diversion, but it is an interesting play from start to finish.
Great game August 31, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this game very much. I do agree with others that it is too short a game. Still I enjoy these kinds and I wish there were more like this out there to play. My 11yr old son has watched me play it and says it is too slow going for him.
