This sequel introduces several new Chimeran enemies with a host of new powers. View larger.
Resistance 2 takes up right where Resistance: Fall of Man left off. Hale is kidnapped by a black ops group in London and forced to Iceland for research testing. The full scope of what happens in Iceland is a mystery, but the game reveals that as Hale wrestles with the insidious Chimera war machine, he must also battle the virus raging inside his body that threatens to transform him into the very creature he fights against.

The Return of the Chimera
The Chimera are the main enemies of the Resistance franchise. For those new to the story, it is believed that the Chimera are of extraterrestrial origin. Yet, it is known that their army expands by infecting humans with a virus that transforms humans into Chimera while inside a cocoon. These creatures are much stronger than humans, and they usually have multiple yellow eyes. They have remarkable healing abilities and thrive in very cold temperatures, which has led them to alter the Earth's climate to a much lower temperature that better suits their habitat requirements.

Resistance 2 introduces several new Chimeran enemies with a host of new powers. A few new characters include the Chameleon, a creature that can cloak itself completely and kill a player in one, destructive blow, and the Grim, which are a terrifying species that attack in hordes.

The Battle Moves to the United States
After the brief opening scenes in London and then Iceland, game play jumps ahead two years and across the globe to San Francisco. Giant, mile-long motherships slowly cruise through the skies, demolishing the city with fiery beams. The city is burned and mangled, and it appears that there will be little to no survivors. As the battle continues across the United States, you're sure to encounter many new, deranged, and much more powerful enemies.

In Chicago, you'll be joined by a squad of soldiers, all carrying different weapons. To survive and move through the level, you'll need to work together, moving from cover to cover, setting up your squad in a smart and defensive manner. These are just a few examples of the challenging levels you'll encounter as you battle your way across the country to save humankind. And if you're hoping for new weapons, Resistance 2 won't leave you disappointed. The US-based campaign is loaded with tons of new weapons to enhance the overall game play and first-person shooter experience.

Online game play Goes BIG
Powered by Insomniac Games' third-generation PlayStation 3 technology, Resistance 2 delivers several console gaming breakthroughs. Most impressive are the stand-alone, class-based, online co-operative campaign mode that can accommodate up to eight players, and the mind-blowing, 60-player, squad-based online competitive multiplayer battle fest. This unprecedented 60-player option could revolutionize online multiplayer game play and is sure to provide countless hours of action-packed fun.

Resistance 2, set in the United States, is loaded with new weapons, enemies, and an unprecedented online gaming experience.

4 out of 5 stars Resistance 2   November 30, 2008

Resistance 2 was one of the great smash hits for the Play Station 3 console and it was amazing and this sequel is great the 60 player online play is outstanding the campaign has very large bosses that will make your jaw drop, and the 8 player cooperative is just great and no game for the PS3 really has to offer than Resistance 2. But theirs that downfall, the game was at all the weapons you can have like insomniacs early games Ratchet and clank but it dropped to the 2 way weapons system, sound problems with characters, some standard clipping problems, and the end will.... let just say its the end........

4 out of 5 stars Good game   November 30, 2008
The best part of the game is the multiplayer ,but the singleplayer is a blast though the story is a little short it still does a good job telling it .overall its a very fun game.

1 out of 5 stars If you call it Resistance 2, then make sure it has the SAME CO-OP!!!   November 30, 2008

Add me and my friend to the list of those who are AMAZED that R2 is not really R2 in CO-OP mode.

How about a patch that lets us play the main story in the same Co-op mode as the original?

How about giving the public a HUGE heads-up, INSOMNIAC, if you're going to make such a fundamental shift in gameplay so we don't spend money on a game that doesn't truly deliver as implicitly promised?

3 out of 5 stars Major disappointment   November 30, 2008

This is one of the most disappointing sequels I have ever played. That is partially true because of how good the original RFOM was. But, RFOM is everything R2 is not. It's as if the developers (whom I normally love) thought that the story was secondary to action. This is a bad Michael Bay film - all action with no character development or storyline. (Luckily, in Transformers, the story was already there for him - which is why it was good.) In the end, you just don't care what happens and then really, why play the game at all?

To all developers: This game misses the one thing that all great games have...ATMOSPHERE. Atmosphere is the feeling you get where the world, the story, and the characters that the developers have created pull you in and give you that feeling of being part of the game. RFOM had it. HALO and HALO 3 had it. Bioshock had it. Atmosphere is created when the environments the story takes place in combine with the characters and the story itself to create that "you are there" feel. RFOM had WWII England (the air raid siren in the beginning sent chills up your spine) combined with the very good voice acting of the narrator. It made you care about what was happening and want to know and do more. R2 has none of that.

Plain and simple, this was a cut and paste, half-hearted effort by the developers. I will be selling it. It's better to play the original over again.

5 out of 5 stars R2: Insomniac Delivers   November 29, 2008
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

Fans of shooters, 3D action adventure games, and sci-fi enthusiasts take heart: Resistance 2 is bigger, badder and even more fun than Insomniac's 2006 hit Resistance: Fall of Man. Tight controls, minimal loading screens, and a highly refined experience (hint: spot-on iron-sighting) which takes the best of R1 and adds color, lighting and momentum - I'm very nitpicky about my games, but there's nothing not to like here, and plenty to recommend.

After the single-player campaign, step up to the multiplayer - the 60-player maps are seamless and lag-free, and the team coop is stupendous, outrageous fun. Insomniac nailed the experience of a team battling impossible odds to, just maybe, survive. (Expect to get knocked down a few times, but the game-play is always fair, and you'll level up to goodies galore.)

Both the single-player story and team coop follow Nathan Hale (the latter, at some distance). But don't be fooled by the lack of a narrator - pay close attention to what your squadmates are saying. R2 may seem like just another alien shoot-em-up, but if you listen and watch closely, you'll find this is one of the most intelligent shooters of 2008, with a hair-raising storyline, quality voice-acting and a subtle critique of imperialism and Empire. This is remarkable in a genre - first-person-shooter - which normally overflows with xenophobia and crass Empire-boosting. I won't reveal any spoilers, play the game to find out what happens, but let's just say R2 manages to blur the lines between human and Chimera.

Bottom line: a must-buy for the PS3.
