Amazon.com Review
Kinetica illustrates the point that you need more than speed and flashy graphics to make a good high-speed racing game. Sure, the racing here is fast, but design issues quickly turn it into a wreck of a title.

Like the Wipeout and Extreme G games, Kinetica features futuristic car designs, a bumping techno soundtrack, and racetracks that defy the laws of physics and logic. In the world of Kinetica, you don't merely race in cars, you become a car. You race wearing one of several special suits that feature souped-up wheels and engines, and choose from a variety of drivers. Each combination of suit and driver performs differently and withstands varying amounts of damage. In order to finish in a decent place, your racer must locate power-ups and perform stunts in the air and on the ground. Successfully completing a stunt will increase your speed boosts. It's just as important for you to learn the many alternate routes each track offers. Every other racer is out to get you and will try to smash or disable you in a variety of ways.

Once racing begins, Kinetica crashes and burns. The racing is blindingly fast, which makes it very hard to concentrate on performing the trickier stunts. Often you can't see far into the distance, which leads to frequent crashes into walls and other obstacles. You can easily fall completely off a track because of the overly frantic action. The awkward track design and the number of challenges you face each moment severely limits the fun factor for players. The game also experiences some occasionally drastic slowdowns when more than two racers are onscreen at once. Kinetica's original gameplay ideas should have stayed in the shop for more fine tuning. --Mark Brooks

Pros:

  • Blazingly fast driving action
  • Stunts and wild tracks
Cons:
  • A little too much action to concentrate on attaining objectives
  • Poor visibility leads to many collisions
  • Frustrating slowdowns during the most heated parts of a race

Amazon.com Product Description
Kinetica provides pure arcade-style racing with several original twists, the foremost of which is the use of kinetic suits--scientifically advanced exoskeletons that fuse with individuals, allowing them to harness excessive speed, incredible agility, and the ability to adhere to almost any surface. Antigravity maneuvers are essential to going ballistic on high-G vertical climbs and maintaining stability at terminal speeds. Moreover, the maneuverability of the kinetic suits allows racers to perform insane stunts and draft behind opponents to enhance the suits' speed.

Each of the 12-plus tracks set in six different racing environments has its own unique personality, design tempo, and challenging obstacles. Kinetica tracks are specifically designed to allow the pure competitive nature of racing to assert itself in the most dramatic ways possible, including offering multiple line corners, alternative crossover pathways, and more. Finely tuned artificial intelligence will keep you on edge as each opposing kinetic racer adapts and adjusts its driving over the course of the race. Using strategically timed turbo boosts, planning Boost Syphons, and drafting off opponents will stimulate the competitive element within the interactive field of racers.

3 out of 5 stars Just needed to complete my ps2 game collection   January 27, 2008
This game is kinda fun for the price. I only paid $8 that's with shipping. If you like racing and you just want it in a different form, then you'll like this game. It's easy and simple. you just race. Would not pay more than $10 though.

4 out of 5 stars unique and original   June 24, 2004

the first time playing kinetica a few years ago, i mus admit i didnt like it. Back then, i found it difficult, but i soon realized that the only reason i found it so difficult was because i had little to no expierience in racing games. I waited, i played the need for speed series, and i picked this game up again. Now that i have more expierience, this game is an adrenaline filled rollercoaster.

The game feastures full body suits, that have wheels on the hand and feet, which race you through a futuristic worlds of ups and downs. Through the entire expierience, you are never completely sure which way is up, since you are constantly shooting up, and along side walls.

The best feature of the game is the boost system, which ties directly to the trick system. Doing tricks is an amazong display of twists, turn and lights. You can do flips, spins, both at the same time, and many other arial acrobatic tricks. After preforming these great acrobatic feats, you earn boos which makes you move MUCH faster.

So you may say, why not a four star rating. There is only one gripe i have about this game, and it is a problem that can be the ultimate downfall of many games. The game is just too short, iwas able to beat it in a solid two hours of gameplay, which is a less than inspiring statistic.

If kinetica would have been made just a bit longer, i think it would have been a five star game. Thats not to say that the short time you are playing is not exciting quite the opposite actually. If you have a lot of freind who can't get enough racing games, then this is the perfect multiplayer delight, and the game is even fun repeating the career several times, well worth the measley 5 to 10 dollars for the speed nut!

5 out of 5 stars My Personal View On This Game   January 26, 2003

Some professional game reviewers or verteran game players may disagree or agree with me, when I say that this game is really awesome! For me it has up beat music (Hybrid, Way Out West, and the oh so awesome Juno Reactor to name a few for fast racing. There are no weapons such as lasers, guns, missles, or blades (there is one item that sends a "shock bolt" to other racers, but it only slows them down to 0 mph with no damage). I don't like racing games to have weapons of distruction while you race. The only games that are cool for that are Kart games and Twisted Metal. Another cool thing is that the racers are racing in their race armor suits. The wheels are attatched to their hands and feet (most of them) and they lay down and race that way. You can do stunts in the air or on the ground, and it is so fun. I can play this game constantly with no bore. This is of course just me. I really think that this game was custom made for me alone, thats how much of a poerfect game for me this game is, in the racing category. It almost feels like you are in the world of the movie "The Fifth Element."

So if you like flashy stunts, fast non-combat racing, upbeat music, and fast racing, this game is one you should check out. I only wish it was 4 players, it still rocks though.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best PS2 Games I've ever played!   October 10, 2002

Kinetica is a futuristic game that allows you to race in a Kinetic suit on awesome tracks. the suits allow you to easily pull off over 7 different stunts. The tracks move off in to different areas, there are no plain trcks in this game. You can play by yourself in a Season (which you can unlock the tracks for when you play with your friends), a single race, or just a practice race to memorize your tricks, which give you boost to better your chances at winning. You'd be crazy not to like this game!
