Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3

Amazon.com Product Description
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.

MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy tidbits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."

Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumor has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

5 out of 5 stars a title that exceeds all of the hype   July 3, 2008
Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title. Regardless of whether you've seen every trailer and screenshot, read every preview and heard every interview, you won't get a full sense of how phenomenal this title is unless you sit down and experience it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Best game I've played in a long time   July 3, 2008

Game Play:
The game play is a lot of fun. The game dynamics change and you are faced with different challenges that require different approaches. You will not get bored with repetitive game play, but rather encouraged to change your play style depending on the situation. There are areas in the game where blasting your way through the enemy is encouraged or required. In other areas the number of enemies is overwhelming and using stealth would be advantages. Other parts of the game give you the freedom to do what you want. There is a plethora of stealth items at your disposal to aid you. At the same time you get tons of weapons: hand guns, machine guns, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, rail gun and the list goes on. Not only that but these weapons are customizable so you can create the ultimate stealth\brute-force weapon depending on your style. Add to this several arcade style boss fights and you get a game play that is diverse enough to keep you hooked till the very end.

Storyline:
I was completely immersed in the storyline. The never ending plot twists and revelations will keep you wanting more. The cut scenes, though long, are fantastic and better than most Hollywood movies I've seen lately.

Graphics:
The screenshots speak for themselves. I haven't seen better graphics anywhere else. If you have please let me know.

If you own a PS3 get this game. It is the best game on the PS3 so far. I can't wait for "Little Big Planet" and "Resistance 2".

4 out of 5 stars Excellent in every way!   July 3, 2008

This game came with the new 80 Gb Playstation 3 that I picked up at the Metreon Playstation Store in San Francisco on June 13th.

So far I've progressed to the point in the game where I've defeated the Laughing Octopus and have left the lab in search of Naomi (no success in finding her anywhere along the mountain trail maze yet. I'm stuck! HELP!)

This is the best videogame I have ever played, hands down! The graphics are on par with the movie Final Fantasy. And the the musical arrangements and sound quality are also the best I have heard in ANY video game! If you have a high-end home theater sound system, you will feel like you're in a true war zone! Your viewing room will shake with each nearby explosion in the game!! You'll feel them too! Just respect your neighbors, even those across the street late at night!

The only thing I think could have been improved is the instruction manual Not always very clear on how to use the controller... however after playing the game a short time, you'll figure out how to use all the weapon available.

This is a MUST HAVE game for anyone who has a Playstation 3. Bravissimo to the minds of Konami!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing title, but not for everyone.   July 2, 2008

I'm going to go ahead and say that I am a die-hard Metal Gear Solid fan. If you have never played a Metal Gear game before, then this game is definitely not for you. Most of the story is impossible to follow without completing ALL THREE of the other games in the series. If you have though, this is quite possibly the most entertaining experience I have ever received from a console. I would venture to say that it is the best game ever made, and the best series-closer from any form of media (kicks Return of the Jedi's butt anyway. Stupid Ewoks). Luckily, if you look to enjoy this game and all of its hype and you haven't beaten all 3 others, they have released a bundle that includes all three of the other games (two ps2 games and one ps1) for $30. I bought it at my local Wal Mart for $28.28 including tax.

Now, for those of you who are looking for a shooter, GTA game, or otherwise posted action game, this is NOT one of those. This is NOT intended to be a shooter. There are several shooting scenes, but this is STEALTH game as the series has always been. You CAN go through the levels shooting up everybody you see and making a bloody mess of the whole place (and I mean bloody; this game is rated M for a reason), but you get very little of the substance of it that way. If you treat this game as a sneaking game, and use stealth throughout out it, you get much more out of it and you feel much more accomplished when you beat levels than when you just go through shooting everyone.

There are a load of cinematics in this title, so be warned. You can skip them and not miss what you need to do next (you can always call one of the characters for a short explanation). If you look to have an HD experience and fully utilize the PS3's power for graphics and 1080p display, then this is a great title to own. There is one section of cutscene that lasts over an hour and a half right in the middle of the game, but it is very action-packed.

The bottom line is this:
DO NOT BUY this game if you want to play GTA or Resistance. Those games are called GTA and Resistance, respectively; not Metal Gear Solid. If you want to have a next-gen gaming experience unlike any other game, then this is the one for you. Also, if you have not played through the other 3 games from start to end, the story will be confusing and convoluted to you (well, even more so than it already is if you have), and this game is not recommended until you have done that.

In my opinion, this is the best game ever made if you consider where it's coming from and you know what to expect. I bought my PS3 solely for this game, and I'd consider it worth it if I never buy another ps3 game.
