Classic FPS fragging fun! July 29, 2008 Just like I remembered from the original PC game classic, only better! Great graphics, no lag that I can detect, and don't forget to download the free map pack through the PS3 console from the online "store."
Terrific, fun, and fast online showcase for your PS3's graphical muscle July 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Now that this game is being discounted for PS3, I feel I must try my best to get others to try it out.
First, let me say that I am not an Unreal fanboy. I haven't played a UT game since the original on PC in 1999. I loved that game, but soon went through a series of residences without broadband internet and many transitional PCs. So I couldn't finance new machines and internet connections to play each successive version. The original UT was generally agreed to be a classic - it ran well on nearly any machine, it played extremely fast, and it was an awesome sci-fi themed shooter with loads of variety which just *felt* right.
Well, a few years, a college education, stable income and broadband connections make all the difference. I picked up UT3 for my PS3 for about $40 used to see if it still had that adrenaline-pumping appeal that it did way back in the day.
To make a long story short: Hell Yeah!
First, the most important aspect of any FPS, *Control*: I was underwhelmed by Call of Duty and Halo games on consoles. They just felt *wrong.* The controller just couldn't do it, blah blah blah. Well, Epic knows how to make a shooter, and they know how to tune it to the machine it's on and the control that's available. I don't know what Epic did, whether it's a combo of slowing down characters slightly, auto aiming assists, or what, but fragging opponents with a SIXAXIS feels just as easy and fluid as it every did with a mouse and keyboard. Personally, I find it even a tad easier, since all the buttons are within thumbs' reach, as opposed to having to tweak your keyboard layout and then try to avoid punching the wrong key in a darkened room.
The *Graphics* are outstanding. They are blazing fast, handle loads of detail and effects, and almost never slow down. I've played for a good 40 hours now, and out of that there have been probably fifteen seconds total of slowdown. And it's not "Mass Effect" level slideshow slowdown - it's barely noticeable.
*Gameplay* is beefy and should provide many months of entertainment, with all the modes available. A campaign mode with a so-so story helps as a training mode against bots. Of course, you can have a bot match by yourself at any time, as well, customizing the number and difficulty of the bots. Bots provide a healthy challenge at medium-to-higher difficulties. Deathmatch, CTF, vehicle CTF, and Warfare are all finely tuned and fun to play. Weapons feel great, and all have their advantages/drawbacks. Vehicles take practice, but can be extremely useful on large maps. The maps kick serious rear-end, by the way. I love the urban and asian-inspired maps, and of course there are plenty of industrial complexes to tear through.
User-created content is easily available online, too, which adds tremendously to replay value. There are mods ranging from the simple (over the shoulder camera), to the wild (UT in 2D sidescrolling gameplay), the the bizarre (want to play in a level which is one giant bathroom?). Epic is known for copious map packs also, one of them already released for free on the PSN, so this game should have legs for years.
*Online* works well, I have an average cable modem connection, and I could play via wi-fi on the PS3 with no lag or hitches. I was up and running in a minute or less, and there are plenty of people playing. It really was pretty seamless and was extremely fun. Online games can be searched for by type, and are displayed with their ping times for your choice. There are plenty of people with varying skill levels, also. I've gone up against some monsters, and some outright noobs.
Even if you're not into online deathmatches, the nuts and bolts of the game are just so fun and satisfying, even playing botmatches is a lot of fun and is something I'd figure I'd do every once in a while. And I'm not a big shooter fan (like I said, Halo and COD leave me cold.) The speed, the movement, the weaponry, and the endorphin rush when you get a "KILLING SPREE" or "RAMPAGE" message are thrilling and addictive. This game gets your heart rate up and keeps it there until the match ends. And if you like shooters? Forget about it. You need to get this game.
I always thought shooters on consoles were a terrible compromise that could never play as well as on the PC. Well, I've got hours spent and pulse-pounding gameplay that tell me otherwise. This game is the equal of any PC shooter I've ever played. Having it in the comfort of a living room, sitting on a couch, with amazing graphics on a 50" widescreen HDTV is a big step up over hunching in front of your monitor, too. If Epic sees fit to release a patch for split-screen local play, this will be the ultimate game - great for having friends over, squeezing off a few rounds to unwind alone, or going online to really get the blood pumping. This game is well worth your $40. It was worth $60 when it came out. So you're getting a steal!
i liked this game online and one player June 20, 2008 this was an awsome game, i had never played the UT before this on wow it was prwetty good
Unreal how bad this game is June 16, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. This is by far one of the worst games for the ps3. There is basically no single player its basically a tutorial for the online which is just as bad. It's laggy on the verge of unplayable all it is run around and shoot people it is ridiculous. It's supposed to have amazing graphics but this is far from the truth, the textures are bland among many other problems. Do yourself a favor and actually get a good game like Uncharted, COD4, or Metal Gear Solid 4, which is the greatest game of all time without a doubt.
Right on the money June 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
You couldn't ask a whole lot more from a councel first person shooter a lot of fragging mindless nonsense can get repetetive, but so does everything else. Graphics are amazing, haven't seen in HD yet, but I found a couple things in the game that are unfinished. If you look at one of the characters butt, there's a hole in it! NO really! All in all, a good game.
