5 out of 5 stars The best NHL game from EA in years   October 7, 2008
It's been a while since I've played an NHL game from EA that didn't feel like I was still playing the previous year's version. Thankfully, NHL 09 changes all that. That arcade feel that EA's NHL series has been infamous for? It's pretty much gone, and in it's place instead is an actual realistic simulation that rivals the 2K series. Opponent AI has also been considerably amped, helping make the game more simulation-based than ever before. The new additions to the already excellent skill stick are superb, with new manuvers and tactics for clogging passing lanes and putting a new emphasis on defensive-based hockey. If using the skill stick isn't your thing, there's a two-button control scheme based on the classic NHL '94 that is a pure joy to use. The Be a Pro mode is immersive beyond belief, and the game looks and plays beautifully. Online play suffers from some flaws however, most notably being an interface that isn't too user-friendly, and some occasional connection issues. Flaws aside though, NHL 09 is without a doubt the best NHL game to come from EA in years, and if you're a hockey fan it goes without saying that NHL 09 deserves your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Hockey Is Here!!!   October 5, 2008
Hockey has definitely not been my most selective choice in video games in past years so i say this is an unbiased review. The game is outstanding in my opinion from the graphics, to the computer AI, even to the sometimes annoying commentary - they comment on EVERYTHING. Having had this game from its release date i have to say i religiously play this game and it will not bore you as i play on rookie and while i have a score-a-thon on some occasions, i do find myself going into shootouts every once in a while. Playing on harder difficulties WILL provide an adequate challenge to even the more adept players as it will require you to make plays on the puck more frequently to stop the fleury of shots on goal you will receive from the opposition. Go out and buy this game because just renting is not enough!!!

5 out of 5 stars 9.5 in my book www.extendedplayarcade.com   October 4, 2008

It is really that good

9.0 they give it as a rating. But I would say 9.5

It is that good (I know it is redundant)

The best part is you can do the "be a pro mode"

It is hard to set up the "Be a pro mode" but once you watch the tutorial it is still not that clear hahaahha.

You can be an actual pro or just make yourself an NHL player and have your favorite number and name on the back of your jersey.

It is a very awesome game. In "be a pro mode" you actually have to wait your turn on the bench a certain parts of the game and wait for your stamina to come back up.

Makes you just want to get in the game even more. So much fun. I might know what I am playing all weekend other than watching football.

1 out of 5 stars Game does not work   October 2, 2008
1 out of 6 found this review helpful

This game is plagued by disc read errors and will not work properly. Dirty disk error messages appear and the game freezes up. EA Sports and Xbox websites have instructions for clearing the memory cache to "fix" the problem. Once the memory cache is cleared, the game still freezes up with the same error message. If your xbox 360 has a memory card instead of a hard drive, it still freezes up anyway. The game was a lot of fun through the first season until the error messages came. If you value your sanity, under no circumstances purchase this game for the xbox 360.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best hockey game I've ever seen   September 28, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This is hands down the best hockey game I've ever played for any system.

By best, I mean the following:
- It feels the most like hockey out of any hockey game from the gameplay to the excellent commentary and realistic graphics.
- It's loads of fun, no matter how you play it.
- It's fairly deep offering three major play modes - Franchise/Dynasty and the new online league play and be a pro modes.
- It's challenging. The difficulty level and gameplay can be configured and the AI defense adopts to your tactics (example: pass into the slot area too much and they'll start collapsing to their net and blocking those passing lanes)

A few of my favorite things:
- Be a Pro Mode is very novel. It locks you in as controlling one player, game after game. Your skill and experience slowly grow allowing you to move up to higher lines and eventually from the AHL to the NHL. The camera is centered around you, even when your line is on the bench. (Optionally, you can have it so you are locked in on your player's position so you play as other players in that position if your player isn't on the ice. You can also disable line changes so your player is always on the ice).

- The commentary is excellent. Not only is it fairly non-repetitive, but it also manages to be very relevant. The commentators talk about where shots are coming from and hint at necessary defensive and offensive adjustments. Even if you've heard those comments before, they still can tell you something you might not have noticed. It's extremely immersive and feels like you're watching a broadcast.

- The simulation aspect of the game is very nice. People dump and chase, players go where they're supposed to and run various offensive zone and powerplay setups accurately. There's a large amount of control over defensive pressure and offensive strategy, and it can be accessed on the fly. On top of that, Be a Pro mode gives you a little blue arrow that hints at where your player should be positioned to work with your team's strategy.

My complaints:
- The game has a practice mode that lets you repeat various setups such as power plays, offensive zone, defensive zone, breakouts, odd man rushes, etc. That's awesome, but there's no option to lock you into controlling a specific player in these modes, meaning you can't practice accurately for Be a Pro mode.

- On several occasions, I've seen he puck get stuck on top of the goalie. The AI completely stops doing what it's doing and the game stands still until the physics system recovers.

- On be a pro mode there is no way of modifying (or even viewing!) your current line's offensive strategy or power play strategy. You then have to guess which strategy you're playing (which changes when you're moved to different lines).

- The game controls let you do a lot, but there is a pretty big learning curve and executing a slapshop takes a bit of hand-eye coordination with the right stick. You can dumb down your controls a bit but you lose certain capabilities if you do this. I also found it hard to execute one-timers in Be a Pro mode.

Bottom line: It's easily the best hockey game out there and loads of fun. It's worth the price just for the new Be a Pro mode, let alone the franchise and online play.
