4 out of 5 stars It's Fun   February 10, 2007
I can't speak for huge hockey fans how realistic it is because i am not a big fan myself. But when it comes to sports video games, i always find the hockey ones to be the most fun and this game is definitely good in that respect. I play the all star level with maximum game speed and no penalties and it makes the action non stop and exciting. The ridiculous amount of checking is awesome and i don't see any problem with a high scoring game. The announcers get to me because you can be winning 6-2 against the computer (say they are the penguins) and if they get a flurry of shots going, the announcers say stuff like "the penguins have taken control of the game" which doesn't make much sense to me. For a cheap hockey game on an outdated console, this does the trick for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Played only once or twice   August 24, 2006

I am reviewing the PS2 game, but can't find it listed here on Amazon.com

I have only played this game 2 or 3 times. I have to say, I'm not completely satisfied with it. I guess I learned that I like to play Ice Hockey in real life, don't mind watching it, but don't love to play videogame Ice Hockey. And I'm a big gamer, see my other reviews.

I'd give this a 4 out of 5 over all, as it is a great game, and has great graphics and gameplay.

Overall fun, 3 out of 5. It's a'iight, but not perfect.

Peace, gamers!

1 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that bad   November 12, 2002
I just got NHL 2001 off ebay. I love all EA Sports games so for me to be writing a review like this, it has to be pretty ugly. Where to begin? First, the play control. The players are impossible to control. Even after you stop, the player seems to continue to slide down he rink. For some reason, players also do 360 spins from one side to side for no apparent reason. Editing lines is also awkward. It's hard to explain, but if the game edits a team for you, you might wind up with a player on more than one line (example: Rob Blake playing left wing and D). If you go to scratch the player from just one line, the game will scratch him from both lines, so it can become tedious to put your player exactly where you want him. Imagine what it feels like to finally set your lines only for your memory card to decide not to save anything... Just stay away from NHL 2001 if you're thinking about getting it.

5 out of 5 stars Best NHL Game I've Ever Played   August 6, 2002
This game is seems very real and is the best NHL game on playstation. The announcers are very good. The big hit button is very useful on D. Other reveiws say there is too much scoring but if you play good D you will be the only one scoring. Also if you want to have Lemieux and Gretzky just create a player. The only cons on this game is unless your being the golie, he's either good or bad. Also after every season 1 player retires and 1 player becomes a free agent. [ I had to create a whole new Yzerman.]
