2 out of 5 stars Another lame cash-in attempt   July 26, 2008
Whenever there's a big budget movie on the horizon, especially one adapted from a comic book, you can almost always bet on a video game tie-in being somewhere in the distance as well. Well, here's Iron Man, and yes, it is nothing else but another lame cash-in attempt that fails to do its comic and movie counterparts any kind of justice. Playing as 'ol shellhead, you take down wave after wave of baddies, with an occasional boss battle thrown in now and then for good measure. Naturally, what kills Iron Man is the fact that the game as a whole is a tedious bore. You have objectives, you take down the bad guys, etc, etc. The whole game is just so repetitive that it pretty much kills anything good about it. Combine this with some frustrating controls and disappointing graphics (and some just plain awful cut-scenes), and you get what we have here. There are some good points to be found, including the fact that the moments of flying around are pretty okay, there's unlockable extra armors, and film stars Robert Downey Jr. and Terrance Howard provide their own voices as well. All in all, whether you are a fan of the comic or the film, the Iron Man video game may be worth a look, but in the end, the game is best left on the shelf.

3 out of 5 stars Repetitive   June 12, 2008

Cons:
- Repetitive
- Controlling Iron Man is kind of clumsy.
- Needs cheats codes to keep the frustration level under control long missions where you end up failing.
- Boss fight difficulty is uneven- second boss is way too strong and yet AI was horrendous. It literally sat there in mid-air at one point.
- Ultimately boss fights are won by firing repulsors and missiles, and hiding behind large buildings to avoid getting hit - the game does not take advantage of the decently sized environments.
- Game also freezes after completion of the second-last mission- even with latest firmware update. Restarting and replaying that mission seems to solve the problem.

Pros:
- Not bad in short doses when you just want to "take the suit out for a spin".
- Graphics are better than previous gen consoles but would have been nice if the world was more destructable- like if he could take down an entire bridge, crash thru buildings, throw objects.

1 out of 5 stars This Iron Man is Rusted and Busted.   June 9, 2008

I rented Iron Man and gave it a test run, since the sticker price seemed a little steep. After playing for a few hours, I found myself wondering how a bug-ridden game like this ever got past beta testing.

I've listed the top offending errors below:

(1) Environmental errors: There was a section in the first level where I moved behind a fence. I came to the end of the fence but couldn't move past it, even though nothing was blocking my path. I had to loop all the way back and go around. This is a pretty basic error, and yet quality testing missed it - not a good sign.

(2) Enemy detection errors: I was fighting a slew of enemies on the second level and before I could advance further, I had to eliminate all the ground troops. There was one left on my radar and I flew down to find he was....under the concrete. Yes, this enemy somehow fell UNDER THE CONCRETE. I had to reset and start the level all over again.

(3) Poor targeting system: The only way I could shoot a target is if the crosshairs were centered on an enemy at that specific moment. That means if Iron Man was running, flying, or dodging, it's pretty likely that my laser blasts or missiles would miss the target.

(4) Hyper-sensitive flight system: The flight controls operate on a hair trigger. If I pressed the hover button too hard, Iron Man shot straight up. If I pressed the hover button too lightly, he dropped like a stone. When I hit the flight button, Iron Man shot forward at Ludicrous Speed - and I couldn't slow down. At all.

In a nutshell, I spent most of my game time flying around at breakneck speed with little control, trying not to slam into buildings, attempting to hit multiple enemies with a poor weapons system, while trying to break a time limit.

There's absolutely no justification to pay the asking price for this game. We, as video game consumers, deserve better.

I personally think this game is really fun. sometimes it's graphics aren't very good, and there isn't much ragdoll physics. but everything else in the game is great. I played for 5 hours strait because i loved it so much.
