Product Description
MGM Hart's War (Blu-Ray)
Bruce Willis stars as an imprisoned officer who refuses to give up his fightto defeat the Nazis in this "absorbing" (Roger Ebert) WWII adventure. Co-starring Colin Farrell ("Minority Report") and packed with "crisp action sequences" (Los Angeles Times), "Hart's War" is a powerful and "stirring tribute to soldierly courage and honor" (L.A. Daily News). When Col. William McNamara (Willis) is stripped of his freedom in a German POW camp, he's determined to keep on fighting - even from behind enemy lines. Enlisting the helpof a young lieutenant (Farrell) in a brilliant plot against his captors, McNamara risks everything on a mission to free his men...and change the outcome of the war.

Anyone who appreciates subtle tension will enjoy this World War II prison-camp drama, based on John Katzenbach's novel, in which honor, courage, and sacrifice are revealed in unexpected ways. Bruce Willis plays the ranking U.S. prisoner in a Nazi POW camp, joined in December 1944 by a law-student lieutenant (up-and-coming star Colin Farrell) who'd been captured despite his father's powerful military connections. When a black pilot (Terrence Dashon Howard) from the famous Tuskeegee airmen is falsely accused of murdering a fellow prisoner, Farrell tries his case and discovers the real motivation behind Willis's kangaroo court. While combining elements of Stalag 17 and The Great Escape, director Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear, Frequency) spices this moral dilemma with well-crafted suspense and a rousing dogfight sequence, but the human drama remains muted despite fine, understated performances by Willis, Farrell, and Howard. An escape thriller with an ethical twist, Hart's War works best as a study of heroism under extraordinary circumstances. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Hart's War   July 8, 2008
I enjoyed this for the story. I love a good war movie. I didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would, but Bruce Willis is a great leading man for this movie.

5 out of 5 stars great movie   June 18, 2008
I am not a fan of war movies, but this is a really good movie for both sexes!

1 out of 5 stars I agree with the "thumbs down" group   May 18, 2008
My only addition to the negative reviews: Bruce Willis shouldn't play army colonels - he's not very good at it. His "acting?" Just look pissed off, with one facial expression, and whisper your lines in a tough way. I think he was over-paid. Luckily, I saw it on TV. It's now erased.

2 out of 5 stars Go with the DVD version   February 26, 2008

My comments only concern the DVD versus Blu-ray issue.

I have the the DVD version and the Blu-ray version. My experience has been that DVDs mastered in high definition look identical to the Blu-ray version (either on a Blu-Ray player or an upconvert DVD player). Although the DVD version has a very good transfer, I could see slight improvement in the Blu-ray version. (The branches on the trees in the first scene had slightly better definition.) On the other hand, it really didn't matter for most of the movie.

The real problem with the Blu-ray version was the lack of special features. The only feature was the trailer. In contrast, the DVD version has two commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and a photo gallery. If you don't care about the features and are willing to pay a bit more for a slightly more defined picture, then go with the Blu-ray. If you want the extras, go with the DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Save your time   September 17, 2007

I was going to give this 3 stars, as it's well-shot, decently done in most ways, and really not bad.
But, I can't say I would recommend it. Too many implausibilities in too many ways along with no character you really care much about adds up to just another WWII flick, with a ham-handed cheeseball ending.
I watched it only because I loved Hoblit's Fallen, but aside from the visual quality (very nicely composed shots and a busy but intelligent camera POV are the highlights of the film), this film leaves no lasting impression. Some pleasant moral platitudes, but it just never hits your gut. The actors are fair, but don't have too much to work with.
I wanted to like this movie but it never really gave me a reason to.
