When Prince's dazzling and dynamic Purple Rain (movie and soundtrack album) and the hypnotic hit single "When Doves Cry" exploded onto the pop-culture scene in 1984, it seemed there was nothing the purple one couldn't do. The film is basically a feature-length music video, but no musician has ever had a better big-screen showcase for his many talents. The plot is really just a theme (about the son of an abusive father struggling not to continue the pattern) upon which to hang some of Prince's most dazzling songs (including "Let's Go Crazy" and the title tune), and some sizzling live-concert numbers. Apollonia Kotero is ravishing as the romantic interest, and Morris Day and the Time provide some terrific musical competition. Purple Rain is an essential artifact of the mid-'80s pop Zeitgeist. Prince took home an Oscar for the song score. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Purple Rain HDDVD   November 12, 2008

Us Gen-Xers were big fans of Prince "back in the day" and I still love this movie. The entire soundtrack is one hit after another. The movie is kind of corny but still works. Appolonia(sp?) never looked better! 8) The transfer is great considering the film source wasn't that amazing to begin with. I bought this mainly for the Dolby True HD soundtrack and I have to say it was a little heavy in the surrounds but still sounds good. It is much, much better than the SDDVD. I have a combo Blu/HDDVD player so buying the HDDVD is no big deal for me, but a deal breaker if you don't have the right player. I'm glad I bought this, but wouldn't reccommend it for more than $12 considering HDDVD is gone.

4 out of 5 stars Fun To Watch   September 24, 2008

I forgot what a fun and cute movie this is. I happened to catch it on t.v. one night and I'm glad I did. It made me remember how much I love the movie and I love his music; from "Controversy" (this is the first song I heard from Prince) to his recent stuff.
