When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there's hope yet for Hollywood's most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay's earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to question their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action extravaganza, albeit an impressively exciting one. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feast of CGI to dazzle the eye, The Island recycles much of the plot from 1979's Clonus while borrowing elements from Logan's Run, Gattaca and Minority Report, and while it's not as smartly conceived as those earlier films, there's no denying that, in many ways, it's Bay's best film to date. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A VERY WATCHABLE SCI-FI THRILLER   December 30, 2008

Michael Bay managed to get things right in THE ISLAND, of course having an above average story helped. Scarlett Johansson, and Ewan McGregor were both excellent, as was Steve Buscemi ( when isn't he? ). There's plenty of action, and very good CGI work in this movie as well.

The plot is quite lucid, and very probable in this film, considering the moral decay that has happened in our country ( and, no I'm not a Bible-thumper ). I could easily see the rich having themselves cloned for replacement parts.

Though the concept isn't overly original, the dialogue, direction, and acting are solid. It was quite enjoyable.

One-Line Film Reviews (Ann Arbor)
The Bottom Line:

With a much higher focus on character than the usual Michael Bay film, The Island develops people (or clones) that the audience cares about and then runs them through a series of exciting chases and action set-pieces; something of a box-office bomb, this is a nonetheless Bay's most accomplished film.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this movie!   December 17, 2008

Fantastic plot about something that could legitimately happen in the future now that human cloning and embryonic stem cell procedures are being refined. Great cast of characters that play difficult-to-act roles.

This one will keep you on the edge of your seats with the action, but will keep you laughing with the subtle humor that the writer puts into the script.

The movie has a fantastic ending which you will love. Enjoy the movie!

4 out of 5 stars A nice mix of Sci-Fi and Action   December 15, 2008

The first part of this Michael Bay movie is a mysterious Sci-Fi tale and the second half has great action set pieces. The casting is great with Ewan and Scarlet in the leads. Looks great on the PSP.
