Amazon.com Product Description This GameCube starter kit comes with one jet black GameCube, two jet black controllers, and one memory card Though it looks like a toy, don't be fooled: the Nintendo GameCube is a powerful video game console that rightly deserves its place among the other next-generation game systems. In fact, its playful, appealing design and small size (the unit is a not-quite-cubed 6 inches) aren't the only features that set it apart from the others. For starters, Nintendo has quite clearly made this a game-only machine. It doesn't try to play your CD collection, run your movies, read your e-mail, or store your MP3 files; the company has concentrated its efforts on games. The prelaunch titles we've seen play uniformly smooth, with bright, fast graphics and great sound. Nintendo says its engineers have removed traditional "bottlenecks" that have, in the past, slowed down processing. New components designed by IBM and MoSys, as well as a large-capacity secondary memory cache, keep instructions moving through the system's microprocessor (MPU) at peak levels. In English: the GameCube is optimized to push speed up while pushing costs down, hence its position at the lower end of the price spectrum. The GameCube is the first Nintendo video game system to use a disc-based media rather than cartridges for its games. Moving the software to disc media generally means lower development costs for the publishers, which, in turn, trickles down to the consumer not only in price, but also in availability and quality, as it's then easier to try out untested game ideas. While most other systems likewise store their games on discs, the GameCube's 3-inch format is smaller than everyone else's, and is so designed to fit in a shirt pocket as much as it is to deter would-be software pirates. Of course, the main advantage of the GameCube is that it's the home field of one of the world's premier game designers--Nintendo. While powerhouses Electronic Arts and Sega make games for all systems (including this one), you can only play Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. And Nintendo, you might recall, has been hitting them out of the park since it started with Donkey Kong. In fact, here's a roll call of characters and series you won't find on the other consoles: Mario, Legend of Zelda, Perfect Dark, Metroid, Kirby, and, of course, Pokemon. A few names that the GameCube will share with the other guys: Madden, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Batman, and Star Wars. The system also comes with four built-in controller ports, so you can easily plug in extra controllers and let friends join in for the multiplayer games. It even has a built-in handle so you can easily move it to a friend's house. It comes with two memory card slots for saving your progress through games, and there's the capacity for future expansion into the world of online gaming.

Gamecube, Xbox, or Playstation 2? July 29, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I own a Gamecube but I can still comment on the Xbox and Playstation 2. Gamecube has exclusive titles that are very good (Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Resident Evil, Mario, Zelda.) The DVD/CD is on the down side, but problems do exist with the PS2's DVD, and you have to buy a remote for the Xbox. I love the GCN controller except for it's lack of buttons. The connectivity with the Game Boy Advance is a plus. Gamecube drops in the online category, but paying for a monthly service really doesn't appeal to me. The Gamecube has a fair release forecast with Rogue Squadron III, Pikmin 2, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy CC, and Metroid 2. My second console choice would be the Xbox. The Controller-S is a big improvement from the original controller. The Xbox controller is best in my opinion. DVD capabilities add to the Xbox's power, and there is no need for memory cards because of it's built in hard drive. The Xbox dominates the online world with Xbox Live. Xbox has a strong line-up of games (Halo, Metal Gear Solid, ummmm...oh yea Splinter Cell), and a good selection of upcoming games (Halo 2, Perfect Dark, Splinter Cell 2). In last but fairly close is the Playstation 2. The ability to play the hundreds of PS One games is awesome and the DVD function is okay. The PS2 is the least powerful machine but it still performs up to par with the GCN and XBOX. Online play is standard with good games (Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto). I'm sure Sony will keep Final Fantasy and GTA alive especially with the upcoming release of the Playstation Portable. My advice: Don't buy a Playstation 2 just yet. Sony is releasing a PSX, which is an advanced PS2. The PSX doesn't have DVD problems and it can record your favorite television shows on it's 120GB hard drive. First, buy a Gamecube. Then an Xbox, and then a PSX. Thank You!
Gamecube, not perfect, but still flawless March 3, 2003 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I know that sounds contradictory, but whatever. It's been a toss up on what to purchase. I'll give you pros and cons for each next-gen system.Playstation 2: Pros +comfortable controller +contains some truly great games (FFX, Metal Gear Solid 2, GTA3 and Vice City) +has a dvd player +plays cd's Cons -has tons of useless games -trigger buttons are tricky -poor dvd quality -wretched classic game to crap game ratio Xbox: Pros +Halo +dvd player Cons -enormous and uncormfortable controller -not many good games -poor dvd quality Gamecube: Pros +Mario +Excellent graphics for its processor (450 Mhz) +Tons of great games +Great (IMHO) controller +Uses minidiscs Cons -no dvd -no cd player -it too has some awful games, but not as much as PS2 or Xbox -most complain about controller Each system has its pros and cons, but I personally would choose the Gamecube over the others. However, this is my opinion so don't freak out and eat me.
Nintendo Beat Xbox And PS2 Again. November 28, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The old N64 beat Playstation on graphics but wasn't as popular on games and cartridges. The new Gamecube has more graphics again over the new PS2 and it has actually more then Xbox. The statistics on the Xbox say 700 something MHZ but it doesn't have graphics engaged like Nintendo Gamecube has. So PS2 or Xbox couldn't make a beautiful game like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0. I have all three systems and I like the Gamecube the most though. The game selection is getting very huge and getting loads of popular games lately. This is how I rate it,Graphics 5.0 I haven't seen any games look this good, ever. You will play any game over and over again and marvel at it's graphics. Game Selection 4.5 The selection is getting huge and popular with Grand Theft Auto 3 coming out in 2004 for it. Then the same year Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Accessories 5.0 The system gives you more accessories like 15 diffrent controllers 7 diffrent memory cards and alot more. Something real famous you can buy a piece to go on the bottom of your Gamecube to play your Game Boy Advanece games on your big screen tv. Also it will improve your graphics. I have all three systems and yes I like Gamecube is the best.
Go with Xbox instead November 18, 2002 Shopping for new game consoles can be hard. You have to put into factor the price, selection of games, and the future of the console. Don't get me wrong... the GameCube is appealing due to its low price over the Xbox and Playstation 2, but for game selection wise and value, its in dead last.Ever since the Nintendo 64, Nintendo hasn't been listening to its fans. A once flourishing company, they used to offer a huge variety of games on their consoles. As with the Nintendo 64, they seemed to change directions, focus more on their 10+ yr old franchises (which are getting old and stale) and don't care about the market. Not only that, but the GameCube doesn't use the standard DVD format meaning if you want to get an extra buck out of your console with DVD movie playback (Xbox and PS2 offer this), you are dead out of luck. Same goes with online play, where for some odd reason Nintendo thinks online gaming is useless. You see where I am going at with this? Nintendo has no grasp on what gamers want in a console yet shove down old franchises down your throat. All this for saving $50 on a console? Heck, if you goto IGN.com and read comparisons between the main 3 consoles, the Cube always wins becuase of the controller, graphical capabilities, extras, and sound clarity. The list goes on and on and on and on. Forget this trash and get an Xbox.
