3 out of 5 stars A Good Game for Kids under 12   January 6, 2009
Paul Mosier
Lego Star Wars II is unfortunately good game unfulfilled. The game contains all three of the original Star Wars saga, each with six chapters or levels. There is the option of completing the levels in story mode or free play. In story mode you are stuck with the preset characters, whereas free play gives you the ability to use any characters you've unlocked or bought. You'd think having extra characters and even Jedi would be an advantage, however most character merely look different, but control and behave the same.

Aside from that you'll be spending most of your time collecting lego coins. The gameplay can be fun in small doses and for less hardcore gamers. In fact with the co-op mode it can even be addictive. Once you've played through the whole game one time you'll want to go back and find the minikits, get all the coins and the extras. A few of the extras such as invincibility and the minikit finder are very helpful. Graphics look ok. I'd say it's hard to make Legos look realistic, but the reflections are somewhat elementary.

Now for the really bad parts: the controls, lack of dialogue, the camera and the glitches. I've been playing games since 1990 and I haven't seen controls this clumsy before. It's as if the game was not even tested. Essentially you can jump, shoot (or hack with lightsaber) and use the action button. People move quite slow. The worst part of the controls is in the ship levels. The developers managed to turn 3-D battles, such as Hoth or the Death Star into a 2-D joke of a gameplay experience. Here you can shoot, flip and turn. Many times you want to flip, you actually turn and vice versa. I can't describe how embarrassingly clumsy this part of the game is. Apparently because of the low budget of the game, there were no voice actors hired or maybe they just didn't want any dialogue. This aspect adds another level of lameness to an already mediocre game.
The camera is trash. You can move maybe 30 degrees to the left and right, up and down of the characters. That's it. You can't change the view and it nearly ruins the whole game seriously. Glitch-wise this game is not bad, but I've had it freeze on me on 4-5 occasions in a single week. Another glitch occurred of course at the end of a level in which I'd spent a half hour gathering all the coins. My ship got caught inside of a solid piece of mountain.

Is the game worth playing? Yes, at least to try out and because it's so cheap. For pre-teens it's a great game. Anybody over 12 will be sorely disappointed in the monotonous, clumsy gameplay. Serious gamers should not even rent this. It will annoy you (like me) to no end.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent game to play with non-gamers   December 3, 2008
C. Piekarz (Fort Collins, CO United States)
There are 3 things most gamers universally like: cooperative play modes, star wars, and Legos. This game delivers on all 3.

It is especially fun to play with non-gamer types (children, significant others, etc) as there is relatively no punishment for dying.

The cutscenes add a humorous flair to a story everybody already knows, and the clever level design will have you replaying this game over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for kids   September 8, 2008

My 7 year old boy loves this game. It does have some areas that are tricky but he absolutely loves this game.

2 out of 5 stars Kind of sad   September 2, 2008

I'll keep this review short.

I don't like this game. It feels very clunky, and the level design(for all three movies) isn't good. Example: On the Return of the Jedi level 1. You can use Luke Skywalker, and slice through Gimmorian guards with your lightsaber. Well, it's more like blocking with your lightsaber until their attacks are done, and then hitting them 3, or 4 times to stop them. This gets old realy, really fast. Especially since they keep constantly popping out and attacking. It's the equal of cutting a steak with a butter knife. It's just plain awkward. Overall this game just felt rushed, and I was shocked that so many game reviewers gave it good marks. Indiana Jones Lego is so much more superior that I can't even put the two games on the same level. I'm hoping the Batman Lego game is done well like Indiana Jones was.
