4 out of 5 stars Good   January 6, 2009

I got this for my gamer boyfriend for Christmas. He likes the feel of it, especially the volume control. The side detachable thing can be clipped on either side. The macros set and brightness control are difficult to set up, though--he has yet to do it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Keyboard!   January 3, 2009

Finally, I can type in the dark and eat ice cream the way Jebus wanted me to in the Bible (it's in the middle somewhere). The keyboard is great. It feels sturdy without feeling heavy. Even though, I'm not a gamer, my husband is and he's left handed and thinks it works great. I just like it for the aforementioned reason. I don't have any major complaints. Being able to control the level of key lighting and volume is a nice touch, and the knobs are easy to see and adjust. Love that the keypad can be moved from side to side and is programable.

The keys do have a different "feel" to them. They don't seem to be as raised other keypads. But that's not a huge issue. They do have a nice click to them and bounce. But at first, I felt a difference.

A great design idea that's well executed.

As soon as I got this I hooked it up and I am LOVING it. I am not a "gamer" per say but I do love to do different things and this keyboard definitly hits all the high spots fr me. I love the fact that you can actually remove things when you really don't need the pesky little things and put them back on if someone wants to use them.
I have had several people try it out and they love it as much as I do. YES YES YES this is a great keyboard.

4 out of 5 stars Great for ergo advantage, but limited features in OS X   December 31, 2008

I'm not a gamer -- I bought this keyboard primarily because I wanted my QWERTY keys closer to my trackball on the right side without having to buy a micro-keyboard. In this respect it's perfect. I have the number pad on the left side and it connects with a satisfying, magnetic snap. For the record the connection on the number pad looks similar to USB but is in fact a different interface. I had entertained the idea of using a USB cable to place the number pad elsewhere on my desk but no big deal. If I decide I really want that I can disconnect the Sidewinder number pad and buy a standalone one.

The F* function keys are very thin, and the rest of the keys are on the small side, but the switch action is nice and fast. I've always used and liked MS keyboards and the build quality of this one doesn't disappoint. There are no raisers underneath to tilt the keyboard up but that doesn't bother me. There are however fat rubber pads to keep it from sliding around.

FYI for Mac OS X users -- I'm using Leopard 10.5.5 and the IntelliType driver software does not recognize the Sidewinder specifically. It reports that there is no Microsoft keyboard attached to my computer. The only customizable keys listed in Key Settings are the F* function keys. Unless I've done something wrong this means only the basic functions of the X6 work in OS X. Controls that do work for me: backlighting & dimmer knob, volume knob, number pad keys (except Num Lock & Calculator), music keys (Play, Previous & Next, at least these work in iTunes, even when the app is not in focus), Windows key (acts as the Apple key as per normal). Keys that don't do anything: S* macro keys, Macro Toggle (1|2), Quick Launch (Sidewinder logo), Cruise Control (running man), Macro Record, Bank Switch (1-2-3). Also for some reason Scroll Lock and Pause at the top right act as the OS X screen brightness controls instead of F1 and F2.

All in all I'm happy with my purchase. I hope Microsoft will update IntelliType to enable the advanced X6 features in OS X, especially the S* macro keys, although I'm not holding my breath. If you want both the number pad on the left side AND some macro keys to use in OS X you might consider the Kensington SlimBlade Media Notebook Set with Wireless Keyboard, Laser Mouse, and Numeric KeyPad (Graphite) K72279US which is more expensive, wireless and comes with a mouse, but which they claim is compatible with OS X (Microsoft makes no such claim about the X6).

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Gamers   December 31, 2008
William R. Stockstill (Marietta, GA United States)
I play my games on the PlayStation 3 80GB so that is not what drew me to the X6. What I needed was an illuminated keyboard to use with my Toshiba Satellite X205-S9349 17-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7100, 2 GB RAM, 240 GB Hard DRive, HD SuperMulti DVD Drive, Vista Premium) while surfing in bed. My laptop weighs a TON, its a desktop replacement so anytime surfing with it in your lap leaves painful memories. So, I like to surf in bed (think of it as replacing reading a book in bed) with it next to me. Having an illuminated keyboard makes it much easier. Even with my laptop in my lap I sometimes struggle to find a key sometimes because I surf usually at night. Not anymore. The X6 is a nice sized keyboard with well spaced, full stroke keys. It seems well built and its cool how the numeric keyboard detaches and is held on with a magnet. Years ago I dropped a hundred bucks on a Adesso ILLUMINATED MULTIMEDIA KEYBOARD BLUE ELECTRO-LUMINESCENT PS/2 ( EL-9805PB ) which to my dismay upon receiving turned out to have half stroke, small keys like an older laptop. The X6 is great because of the detachable keypad, illuminated keys that are springy and don't feel cheap and it also has multimedia controls on it to control your default media player which in my case is iTunes. I know if I want to get back into gaming on the computer I am hooked up with the seemingly limitless customization options the X6 has. Great keyboard that is a must for anyone that who can't see their keys in the dark.
