5 out of 5 stars Yet another addictive Mario masterpiece   June 30, 2008
The first time I played Super Mario World I was disappointed since I felt the overall feel, sound effects, and the overall package were not as impressive and fun as my all-time favorite Mario game, Super Mario Bros. 3. But after a little while I really grew into this one. The graphics are a step up from SMB3, coming about two years after the NES classic, and feature some new enemies as well as some familiar ones like the unholy annoyance known as Lakitu. Among the new enemies is an extremely annoying football player baddie that cannot be killed with a jump, and usually takes a good number of fireballs (and a follow-up jump) to kill.

Another thing I love about this one is the in-game save feature. SMB3 let you stay on the same world if you lost the game (and the murder-inducingly-frustrating original Super Mario Bros. had no such features at all), but Super Mario World lets you save after 2 or 3 levels, making it a greater convenience to play and easier to beat. The music is as good as ever as well; the victory music after you defeat a boss is especially epic and triumphant in that cheesy video game way. It always puts a smile on my face! Oh, and Yoshi also gets his debut in the world of Mario here. Awesome!

Overall, this is yet another addictive Mario classic. Highly recommended as usual.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but definitely frustrating   February 8, 2008

I was disappointed by this game. I found it pretty difficult, especially the ghost houses, which are annoying and take dozens of lives to get through. Yoshi is adorable, especially when he eats the little fruits, but he bolts if you get hit. That's a drag since he is a main draw of the game, and he just can't wait to run away from you. (?) I usually only play the first couple boards of this game, because they are the only ones that have a solid-ground type of 'feel', like classic Mario is supposed to. Even later in Worlds 1 and 2, the boards get way complex and lose that fun simplicity.
This one is better than Super Mario 3 (holy hell, that second world that is ALL water boards?! Get ready to die a million times. Japanese Water Torture, that...)

So, it's worth trying out. A lot of people like this game a lot and can actually pass it somehow, but personally I like the games where you can actually move up in them comfortably and not die forty times at every ghost house or water board or chasm-jumping board. Again, there is really something to be said for terra firma...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Mario Game EVER!   January 5, 2008
I've been playing this game for over 12 years and it still hasn't gotten old! Includes all the classic characters: mario, luigi, yoshi, the princess, and the bowser clan. If you don't like this game, then you are probably not a mario fan. All Mario fans: buy this game, it's amazing!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A QUIRKY, ENTERTAINING, WILD, AND FUN ADVENTURE 8.75 OUT OF 10   December 28, 2007
When I bought my Super Nintendo almost four years ago this was one of the first games I owned for it. Now I have a stunning 119 games for the SNES alone, meaning it has the biggest selection of games of any of my other systems. NO ONE SHOULD DISLIKE THIS GAME IN ANY WAY, IF YOU DO, YOU MUST REALLY DISLIKE CLASSICS IN GENERAL. It is one of the wildest and insane games ever made, and that is a clear signature of the originality of Nintendo. The game is basically about Mario and Luigi battling their way through the island while defeating the forces of Bowser yet again and rescuing the damsel in distress YET AGAIN. As you beat the different sections of the island you move to larger and much more challenging sections of the island which get crazier as you move from stage to stage. The boss battles can be challenging and funny because of how the bosses are designed. No retro gamer should miss out on this hilarious and original game that is still a lot of fun to play despite its release almost 20 years ago (in a few more years it's going to hit 20). One problem is the fact this game can be quite challenging and confusing in some areas. And the Game Boy Advance version of this game lets you play either Mario or Luigi (it doesn't make you stay exclusive to one during segments of the game). Still, if you don't have a SNES, you can easily find this game on Game Boy Advance and it looks and plays the same as the original classic.
