4 out of 5 stars Decent Psikyo game with Camcom characters   November 28, 2001

This game is obviously from famous shooter developer, PSIKYO, with Capcom characters. I always liked Psikyo games, especially 1945 series, with its challenging game play with Psikyo trade mark game formula along with vibrant graphic.

The most absurd thing about any shooter game, if I have to point out, is infinite continues. What's the point of playing a well made game in one seating? However, this game does offer controlled infinite continues. From level 5, you will have to start from the start of the level you died from, not from the spot you died at. However, it can be manipulated if you are playing with a friend, and as long as one is on the screen, the other player can continue (now,,that's a cheating). Graphic seems decent throughout the game, but it seems somewhat outdated with cartoonish characters.

The only complain I have is that certain enemy attacks are not there to test your reflex but rather too overwhelming. Yes, it's possible to finish the game with one continue, but it's REALLY hard to pull that off (and knowing what 'spot' at when becomes crucial). I would prefer limited continue system over controlled continue system like this game. However, owning this arcade perfect shooter and another Psikyo game with this admission is well worth your money. Where shooters are being way under-rated, this game does hold its own place with good qualities. Give it a try =)

2 out of 5 stars Boring   August 31, 2001

I love old style 2D shooters but this one is just dull. The graphics are nice (2D) and for about 5 minutes I -almost- had fun, but then I didn't want to play it anymore. I can't quite put my finger on why this game fails but suffice it to say that it's nothing memorable. Reccommended only for people who are absolutely starving for 2D shoot-em-up action.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a try if you like old style 2D shooting games   July 30, 2001
Gun Bird 2 is a traditional 1-2 player overhead shooter similar to other Dreamcast shooters like Giga Wing and Mars Matrix. I consider Gun Bird 2 to be better than Giga Wing however, due to it's original anime-type characters and story. There are several characters to choose from (including Morrigan from Darkstalkers), and each has his/her own trademark attacks and endings. Another feature that sets Gun Bird 2 apart form Giga Wing is the difficulty. You don't have to rely on constantly bombing or reflecting to dodge an impossible-to-dodge spray of bullets...you can just set it to a lower difficulty and coast through the game if you want. Unfortunately, Gun Bird 2 is still short and lacks replay value no matter what difficulty you set it on. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to beat, and the endings for each character aren't particularly long or rewarding either. I believe most of the older shooters like Raiden, Robo Aleste, and Twin Eagle were much better. When you consider your choices for a old style shooter on the the Dreamcast though, Gun Bird 2 isn't entirely a bad apple. It has more style and flare than Giga Wing at least.

2 out of 5 stars Thoroughly lackluster   July 10, 2001

The problem with the 2-D shooter genre is that it's very easy for developers to turn out weak, uninspired drek that will still sell well to a niche market; shooters aren't nearly as popular as they used to be and fans will snatch up the new ones with little hesitation. Sadly, I was one of them.

Gunbird 2 plays looks and plays almost exactly like Strikers 1945 on the Sony PlayStation, and believe you me, that is NOT a good thing. The graphics look horribly dated...I know a great game does not require eye-melting visuals, but come ON. Systems less powerful than the Dreamcast consistenly produced games that looked far more impressive than this. Capcom's insertion of characters from their more well-known games does nothing to increase Gunbird 2's appeal. There's precious little depth to the gameplay, as well. The stages are very short and you get from one end to the other simply by using your special attacks at every opportunity and continuing as many times as you need to. There comes a point where continuing will send you back to the beginning of the stage, but instead of making you more determined to beat the game, it just annoys you.

It seems that most shooters are really good or really bad. There's Einhander, there's G Darius, and then there's...this. Life is too short to waste playing bad shooters!
