2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money   December 5, 2008
Smartparts SPX12 - Digital photo frame - flash 256 MB - 12.1"

I've been fiddling with the SPX12 for 4 hours now. Its not for the faint of heart and not worth the money. I purchased it for pics and video for my Mom.

The pics side is ok. It does the job as expected.

The video side, at least on this one, is worthless. Does not play 8 out of 10 movies I've tried. No AVI's. Will play a couple of MOV's. I've tried to rescale the videos down to screen size, saving AVI's as MOV's, re-saving MOV's and exporting them in 3 different apps to a new MOV file. Nothing. The SPX shows the videos but will not play them.

Pros:
Large screen
Decent job on photos
Decent sound quality

Cons:
Screen is so-so. A Sony picture frame we had was way better.
Very picky about flash cards: insertion is a guess, may or may not read card
Video, at least on ours, is virtually worthless.
The remote is ok if you like repressing buttons until the SPX finally responds.
The included instructions refer to buttons on the remote that do not exist.

The SPX12 is not worth anything near $179. This one goes back tomorrow.

1 out of 5 stars Not as advertised!   December 1, 2008

Do not buy this. You will not get what you thought you'd get.

I don't know if the manufacturer changed the product since the original product description was written or what. But what shows up at the door is definitely not what's advertised.

There is no internal memory in the frame. You MUST have a separate memory card to use it. And there is no way to control the speed of the slide show, meaning that unless you enjoy seeing pictures zip by every 1.5 seconds you will not like this frame.

I had mine for a whopping 2 hours before I realized that it had none of the features I bought it for and it was quickly on it's way back to Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Finally figured out displaying photos in a particular order   November 30, 2008

Overall: very good picture quality with poor documentation and interface.

Having 1500+ photos to get in the frame, I opted to use the supplied Optipix optimization s/w. This wound up making it difficult to arrange my photos and led to several discoveries about the product.

Experimental Observations:
a. Photos are displayed on the frame from earliest to latest modification date.
b. Photos can be placed in folders on an SD card, folders will be displayed earliest to latest creation date.
c. Optipix S/W handles horiz. pictures well, gets grainy on vert. pix.
d. Internal memory only held about 1000 optimized pix in my case
e. Internal memory access is slow via USB
f. Need to have PC on and USB connected prior to booting frame to be able to delete files on internal memory via USB

In the end, given that I saw 4GB SD cards free after rebate, the internal memory seemed like a waste of time.

I finally settled on the following process for getting photos to display in order using an SD card:

1) Use Optipix for horiz. pix as needed for compression, store on PC.
2) Arrange pix in folders on SD card, being careful create folders in the order I want them displayed (makes it easier to manage groups of photos).
3) Change modification date of photos within folders (e.g. add an "_" to end of file name) to order pix if needed
4) Insert SD card into frame and sit back.

I am pleased enough with the quality of the product to buy a couple more as gifts for the relatives, but I plan to set up the SD cards beforehand so it is plug-n-play for them.

5 out of 5 stars Smartparts 11" SB1100B Digital Photo Frame   November 29, 2008
Have now had this Photo Frame for about 1 month and its worked perfectly. I have tried both the internal and external flash drive, and memory cards with no problems. The unit started up immediately and the memory card and flash drives were found with no problems and we got pictures on the frame from the get go.

I don't see any overheating mentioned in other reviews. My unit is very cool to the touch even after hours of operation.

The price is exceptional for an 11" ($99) and is a very good value.

The colors are vivid and sharp and overall very good.

I highly recommend this photo frame for manufacturing quality, picture quality, ease of operation, and low price.

4 out of 5 stars not so subtle hints from the grandparents   November 29, 2008

After repeated compliments from the grandparents on EVERY visit since we purchased ours last summer...our choice for a Christmas gift for both sets of grandparents who have everything is easy this year. The larger screen is a must so the additional cost is worth it. We paid $60 more for ours which is exactly the same brand and size at a local discount warehouse store so that is my only complaint!
