5 out of 5 stars Great for Kids   January 5, 2009

It provides an excellent way to introduce a 9-year-old to strategy games.

My 9-year-old son is now playing Civ on the PC!

I have no experience with computer strategy games but have realized how addictive this game can be. No other game had me playing for hours straight. This game lacks much in the way of HD visuals I enjoy w/ other PS3 games, primarily the limited and subpar cut scenes but surprisingly to me that was an afterthought. Not difficult on the default setting but I believe it will have repeat playability by increasing the difficulty level as well as using the different historical characters. Bonus wife approval due to lack of blood, gore, and general loudness.

5 out of 5 stars FUN, ADDICTIVE GAME   December 29, 2008

Civilization Revolution is a strategy game in which you take charge of a historical civilization and lead them from humble beginnings to world domination. Before the game begins, you must make an important choice: Which of the 16 civilizations will you command. Each has a starting bonus and four era bonuses that you'll gain as you progress through the ages, bonuses that will aid you in some way on your path to victory. There are four types of victory in Civilization Revolution: cultural, economic, technology, and domination. Trying each of the different civilizations is a lot of fun and makes every game very unique and challenging. The graphics are excellent and this game supports full 1080p for the best resolution. I could play this game for a week straight and not get tired of it because there every game is different and there are so many choices to make. If you like a game where you really have to think and make intelligent choices then look no further. This is by far one of the best Playstation 3 games that have been released so far. I have uploaded some additional screen shots of this game to give you a better idea what it is like.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best game I have ever owned   December 21, 2008

I purchased Civilization Revolution when I got my PS3 back in August this year. I had seen commercials for it on TV and read some fairly positive reviews online. While I had seen other people play the old Civ games on their computer in the 1990s, I myself was not familiar with it.

That being said, the purchase of this game comes with no regrets whatsoever. I am a big fan of the board games Risk and Empire Builder, as well as the computer game Sim City 3000, which have elements that Civilization Revolution seems to encompass. In short, you select a certain leader (each coming from a different country with specific benefits) and try to build a successful civilization, meaning that you either conquer the world, become an economic or cultural superpower, or build a space program to take you to Alpha Centarri. With each city you build in your civilization, you must implement certain beneficial buildings, such as libraries, markets, temples, courthouses, etc. (similar to Sim City). Additionally, you need to keep your military strong to avoid other civilizations from invading.

There is not much more than I can say about this game that you cannot find by watching clips on Youtube. However, what I can say is that this game has been very rewarding. Even 4 months after the purchase, I can still pull this game out of the box and play it with the same eagerness as day 1. The average game takes 2-4 hours, so it is not a huge time investment and rarely gets monotonous. I've heard that some fans of the earlier Civilization games found this title to be too simplistic, but I have no complaints. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Speed Civ!   December 19, 2008

Well, let's see...I own Civilization III and IV plus all expansion packs for the PC and I own the Nintendo DS Version of CivRev. I guess that makes me qualified to render an opinion on the PS3 version of CivRev. First of all, understand that this version of Civilization was written from the ground up specifically for consoles and hand held gaming devices. So if you are buying this thinking it will be "just like Civilization IV for the PC, think again because it is clearly not meant to be.

Now that the disclaimer is laid, in order to judge this game you must do so on it's own merits and it has plenty of those. Even the 1-Up review failed to do that, openly comparing this version to the highly successful and addictive PC based version(s) of this series. Taken on it's own merits as a PS3 game it is a ton of fun and IMHO may serve to introduce console owners without prior knowledge of Civ to the series. The chances are pretty good that if they like this version, they will just love the PC version with its' much deeper involvement by the player.

This game is very intuitive to play, and it is easy to navigate the interface and get things done. The graphics are pretty good, if a bit cartoon-ish. My only complaint is the, uhm, voice acting if that's what you call it. Your advisers and the other AI leaders "speak" to you in unintelligible gibberish that gets annoying after a while to me. But there are options to drop the volume of that so this is not a deal breaker. Still, actual human voice overs would have been nice.

The gameplay is pretty darn good really other than that. You get to make classic Civ decisions, sometimes in a bit of a hurry because other Civs are banging away at your empire. The upside (or down side depending on your outlook) is that you can get a game in in an evening as opposed to days or weeks. This is a good thing because let's face it, sometimes the minutia of a "classic" Civilization game can get tedious if your honest about it. This version offers a down and dirty "speed Civ" type experience that is very enjoyable once you get used to how it works.

So for me, this game offers a great alternative to my highly revered Civilization IV series for the PC when I just want to have some quick Civ-like fun. I don't expect it to replace the PC version but, like my DS version, I expected it to fill a niche for me. This it does very well and now that the game has been reduced to $39.99 it is a good buy. I think it will be a no-brainer if/when they place it in the Greatest Hits category at $29.99 price point. The original release price of $59.99 was just too high in my opinion based on the lack of Trophy support and the likelihood that expansion packs will not be released for this version. But at this price point, even with those caveats I think this game is certainly worth having in your library.
