Works as advertised but very, very short ink life December 28, 2008 P. Oh (CA USA) I bought this printer to consolidate multiple fax/printers and for the wireless networking. Overall it works mostly as advertised and has a compact footprint but a few critical flaws mar it and I will most likely never buy another Brother printer again. The first is that there is no "sleep mode" - the printer is basically on all the time so if you want to use it as a phone and answering machine everything has to be on including the color LCD 24 hours a day. The second is the EXTREMELY short life of the inks and the high replacement cost. Brother argues that the multiple ink cartridges are cheaper but when they last perhaps 50-75 pages does it really matter. Buying a set of black and color cartridges will easily set you back $80 and you'll be back for more very quickly. I'm familiar with the business model where you 'give away' the printer and charge for the ink but this is bordering on ridiculous. I've had an Epson before and they weren't that much better. Perhaps it's time to give HP a try.
Brother MFC-685cw Multi-Function December 20, 2008 zip439 I have had this Printer/Fax/Copier/Answering Machine for about 9 months. It has been very good for me as I use it with my personnal computer at home. It easily connects to Windows XP. I use wired connections. Pictures from a digital camera will print brilliant and clear if you place your camera's card directly into the slots on the printer. When pictures are first downloaded onto your computer, and then printed they will come out dull with less vibrant color. I have had no trouble, and the real selling point is it's compact size! The ink changes easily from the front, and it comes with a very detailed instruction book.Brother MFC-685cw Color Inkjet Multi-Function Center with Wireless Network Interface
Good Printer, huge bargain when you price ink cartridges! November 19, 2008 L. Whitaker (Discovery Bay, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This printer was very simple to set up and install. The step by step instructions are a no brainer. Print quality is very good. Print speed is adequate for my use. It is slightly noisier than the HP all in one machine I had prior to this one...but the Brother appears to be sturdier. If you are a power user that prints constantly all day I think you may be slightly disappointed in the only adequate speed of this machine. However, if you print less than about 50 pages per day... this machine might be a great fit. The one HUGE advantage is the ink cartridges. Not only are they available from resellers at a fraction of what the HP cartridges cost... Having 3 separate color ink cartridges means no more replacing the expensive 3 color cartridge when one of the colors runs out. If you check amazon's price on the replacement cartridges they have available, I think you will be amazed at how inexpensive they are. I can buy about 6 black cartridges (the one I use most) for about the same price as one of my old HP cartridges. That was the clincher for me. Good luck to all.

Brother Wireless printer (HELP) October 21, 2008 Cynthia A. Stewart 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I did not know exactly what a wireless printer meant. I thought that we would not have to hook it up to one computer. My kids have seperate laptops. Is there any way of using this without wireless internet? I have not yet been able to contact anyone, so it has just been sitting there. I am unaware of how to make a return. Please, I need some advise. Thanks Cindy Stewart cell 586-419-9982
