4 out of 5 stars Nice case!!   September 21, 2007
I do like this case! It seems to have a lot going for it and many places to put stuff! The impact resistance seems good - I am sure our kids will test that feature at some point. Things in the case don't shift around with velcro that is on the back of each piece. I would have offered a 5-star rating if it had 2 things - it could really use a strap - even something that just fits your palm through it. Also, the case to hold the discs doesn't hold them with jackets - you put them in without. They could use to be a hair bigger so that you can choose to put the disc in with a jacket. But, then again, if you didn't want to keep them in jackets, they would probably slide around. So, overall a good product!

5 out of 5 stars Shock Protection For Your PSP   December 15, 2006

By looking at my other reviews, you might have noticed that I have been spending a lot of effort to find the perfect carrying case for my Sony PSP. Basically, I've spent countless hours on the internet, the malls, and PSP forums/chatrooms in search of the perfect case. I also visited stores like Best Buy, Gamestop, and Wal-Mart so that I could actually inspect the products that I'm interested in. I have learned a lot during my search. The more I learned, the more my ideas evolved.

For those of you who are in a hurry and simply want to know whether you should consider the SLAPPA HardBody PSP Complete Case, I will go ahead and tell you that it deserves a 5-star rating. It is a very high quality, well-designed, and unique carrying case for your Sony. It is a definite bargain at the price being asked. The exterior of the case is made of a semi-rigid material called xEVA, combined with PVC. Ok, I know what you're probably thinking at this point. You're thinking, "Gosh, Citan, aren't those the same materials used to make garbage bag?" Let me assure you that this product doesn't look anything like a plastic garbage bag. It looks like something that you would find in an expensive electrincs boutique. The design and the aesthetics are that good. This material feels like rubber. And it does have a little bit of flexibility and compressability, just like rubber. However, it is rigid enough that you can place 50 lbs. on top of it without it completely caving in. The middle part of the two big sides will start to compress at about 20 lbs, but the rigid sides on the four small edges will keep the case from caving in until you increase the weight to about 50 lbs. In other words, if your 150 lbs. brother-in-law were to sit on it accidentally, your PSP will probably be damaged. On the other hand, this case is fairly large and anyone who isn't blind would be able to see it before sitting down. Please keep in mind though that the biggest threat to the "life" of your cherished PSP is getting dropped. In that regard, I don't think this case has an equal. The synthetic plastic-rubber material will definitely absorb shock. The PSP itself is encased in an inner case, made out of a material similar to neoprene, held down by velcro. This is the best case that I have seen for shock protection. (By the way, I have participated in an egg drop competition in the past. This is competition in which you are given a raw egg and given the challenge to build protection so that it will survive a high drop on concrete).

Now, back to the things that I have learned. Basically, you have to determine what type of protection you want. Are you looking to protect the PSP while it is being carried or transported? If so, then you need a carrying case like this one. This one is larger than most. It can hold your console, six UMDs, the charger, and the headset. I have only been able to find two other carrying cases that will equal the protection of this one. One is a hard aluminum case. That one is made by intec and looks like a small laptop case. The other one, for the most extreme protection, is the Pelican 1150. I wrote a review on the Pelican 1150 also. Now, the Pelican is the absolute. It is watertight, crushproof (a 150 pounder like me can stand on the Pelican with no problem), and airtight. The Pelican is smaller and will not have as much room as the other two. But the Pelican is not made specifically for the PSP, so you will have to make some adjustments to the foam inside. The aluminum Intec feels sturdy but I have not tried it yet.

If you are looking for a case that stays on the PSP to protect it while it is being used, then you are looking for a protective case. This is the type of case that has holes to access the controls so that you can keep the PSP inside and still play. This type of case is designed to protect the PSP if you accidentally drop it during play. These cases have a thin rubber material inside to help absorb shock. Good examples are the Logitech Playgear Pocket and the Sony PSP Travel Case.

The most important concept that I've learned is that the best way to protect your PSP from shock and impact is to keep it from falling in the first place. In that regard, the best weapon you have is a wrist strap, not a Logitech Playgear Pocket. You see, even a well-designed product like the Playgear Pocket cannot guarantee that your PSP will survive a 4-foot drop on pavement. Besides, your PSP can fall out when the case cover is open, while you're playing a game. So, again, there really is no substitute for a wrist strap in fall prevention.

So, what do you need? Definitely a wrist strap. You will also need a carrying case like the ones mentioned above for transporting your PSP system. For most users, I would recommend this SLAPPA HardBody over the Pelican 1150. It is better looking and specifically designed for the PSP. Get the Pelican only if you feel there is a chance someone might sit on your PSP. You can also get a protector case, like the Logitech Playgear Pocket. The main purpose that it will serve is to protect the PSP's exterior from scratches and getting bumped around.
