Leapster – DIDJ Hannah Montana Review

Consisting of several minigames, Hannah Montana plays almost like a virtual diary of one of her TV shows, bound to please any young female fan of the show.

Time Teasers is a question/answer mini game that always revolves around some type of time related question.  One type of question the game might ask is “It is 12:15PM right now and Hannah needs to be at her concert in one hour and 45 minutes.  What time will it be?”  The goal of these questions is to get users more familiar with how time works and the numbers on a clock and calendar.

Musical Spelling combines music and letters with a Guitar Hero inspired mini game.  Letters will scroll across the screen and the player must select the correct ones as they fly by.

Besides spelling, this game also has Math Grooves which will ask simple math questions.  Message Mix-Up is a very modern day minigame as players will need to spot out the errors from a series of text messages on a cell phone.

One of the biggest differences with Hannah Montana is how the educational aspect is integrated into the gameplay.  Sonic The Hedgehog, for example, is essentially made up of two parts: the sidescrolling action stages and the educational questions.  From time to time, Sonic’s gameplay will be interrupted with a spelling minigame, which can be seen as an inconsistency to the gameplay.  However, Hannah Montana’s educational minigames are the gameplay.  The type of minigame will switch often, but there is never that inconsistence mix of game action versus educational content because the entire game is the educational content.

Throughout the course of the game, you will unlock new clothes, photos and sound clips from concerts.  If you successfully complete a week’s worth of activities, the player is rewarded by planning a Hannah Montana concert.

3rd – 5th grade students (8-10 year olds) are the target audience for this game.  But instead of being focused on one topic in particular, Hannah Montana will quiz its players on math, vocab, spelling, and time/clock/calendar.  With the wild success and popularity of Hannah Montana, this game is sure to be a hit with young female gamers while hitting on multiple academic topics is sure to please parents.
