Bully
Release date: 0 2007

Behavior Issues

Despite a long delay, Bully, to be published by those lightning rods of controversy, Rockstar Games, continues to draw the ire of politicians, advocacy groups and anyone else who likes to judge things months before actual availability. If you haven’t heard by now, Bully is a title being developed by Rockstar Vancouver, formerly Barking Dog Studios, and it appears to be a bit of a departure from the Grand Theft Auto series.

Before its original release target, Bully was cloaked in a veil of mystery with a great deal of information being held close to the vest. Not much has changed in 2006 as a summer release is on the docket. The little that can be told about the story revolves around the main character, Jimmy Hopkins, a husky young man with a squinty face, as he navigates his way around the schoolyard and halls of the aptly named Bullsworth Academy. The fictional private school’s crest features a shield depicting a closed fist, a rearing snake, a rat, and a skull with a bull’s head set above, and the Latin motto beneath reads “Canis Canem Edit” that translates to “Dog Eat Dog”. Hogwart’s Academy this ain’t.

Now, if you listen to the cries of outrage buzzing around this game, you would expect that the sole objective is to become the baddest bully on the planet for the mere sake of being out of control with power and hormones. What has been revealed by the developers appears a little deeper than just a bully-fantasy simulator. With a bit of cheeky humor, you are supposed to guide Jimmy in a school as corrupt as the previously mentioned description would have you imagine it to be. Teachers will pick on Jimmy along with classmates who have already made their way up the ranks of the bully leader boards. While attempting to outwit and outfight the various opponents in this satirical look at prestigious, private school life, Jimmy will determine his own destiny even in the romance department. Yes, another downtrodden geek fantasy comes to life as Jimmy gets the chance to win the heart of a lady as well.

Gameplay details are pretty much nonexistent at this point as well, with not much beyond screenshots being made available. However, look for the game to feature a large, sprawling environment and nonlinear mechanics. Run around playing pranks and beating on the other privileged snobs who, if the stereotypes hold out, will already be in their fifth or sixth school due to “behavior issues”.

Speaking of “behavior issues”, another thing you can look forward to regarding Bully is the spotlight of the mainstream media and talking heads from one end of the globe to the other. As you can tell from this preview, there’s about as much information on this game as there is about Jimmy Hoffa’s final resting place. Despite that, a lot of people are already on the “hater” bandwagon.

This summer, we should be able to judge for ourselves the kind of social damage Bully may wreak. Will it be a good diversion to turn the tables on the culture of bullying for those gamers who are, or remember being, socially-awkward kids? Or will it entice a new generation of impressionable minds to the bullying lifestyle leading to the end of Western Civilization? Only time will tell.
