Gun Porn
|
The underground world of Black Ops. Petty treaties and ethics don’t apply in this world full of political manipulation and military control. A creation of Criterion and Electronic Arts, BLACK will be a first person shooter with less emphasis on ammo conservation, stealth, and troop commandment, and more on blowing the living hell out of everything and everyone! This isn’t a Tom Clancy stealth/squad-based game, nor a Halo one-man strategy shooter. The basic premises of BLACK is such: You take on the role of an American Black Ops killing machine who is sent into post-Cold War East Europe to locate and secure two missing agents from an American agent-gone-bad. BLACK’s producer, Jeremy Chubb explains, "We've had enough of covert gameplay. We've seen a lot of games in this genre, and when you say a game is about black operations immediately make assumptions about stealth, and squads, and tactics. We just want to put you in the world and give you a gun. The only covert thing in this game is that you kill everyone, so there's never anyone left to know that you were there in the first place."
The best description of BLACK comes from Lead Designer Craig Sullivan, in which he describes it as “gun porn.” The game will feature a wide variety of extremely lethal weapons, including handguns, assault rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, flamethrowers, and the all-shrapnel spreading grenade! Don’t worry about running out of ammo…weapons and ammo can be picked up off the bodies of your victims. A physics engine is also in place to make the environment basically completely destructible, from chipping away at stone to taking out an entire pillar, and consequently, literally “bringing down the roof.” “We set out with the goal of making something that's not just a throwaway shooter," states Chubb. "We don't want this to be a really simple game; we want it to be something that you want to return to again and again. We want people shooting the environment, and we really don't want them just charging around like nutters with guns. We want them to have to think about what they're doing.” Enemies are everywhere, as far as the eye can see, and each one of them has the sole purpose of taking you out, by whatever means necessary. These means include taking out your cover with endless amounts of ammo. Those unfortunate enough to stand in your way will lay to rest in the spot of their demise the entire level. No disappearing bodies in this shooter, adding greatly to the mayhem and carnage in your wake.
From the video and photos currently available, BLACK looks like it could contend as one of the best looking first person shooters on the market. Smoke and debris fill the air as your gun fires off innumerable rounds of ammo, each shell violently propelling itself from your gun. Explosions rock and rattle the entire area, conveying the true chaos that is your mission.
BLACK’s control system will work like many other first person shooters out on the market. The dual analog sticks will be used for movement and free-looking, while the shoulder triggers will be used for firing and grenade tossing. The four face buttons will be utilized for reloads, melee attacks, and silencer equips (though I’m not completely sure why you would need such a thing in a game based on total weapon insanity!) Sights can also be brought up by clicking down on the right analog stick…The basic necessities for a first person shooter.
BLACK is expected to be released in the US on February 27th for the XBOX and Playstation 2, amid violence-hungry gamers. Someone better call Jack Thompson.
