Fight Night Round 3
Release date: N/A

Rivalries are Aplenty in Fight Night Round 3

While there has always been a boxing game in production or on retail shelves, very few games have tried to capture the realism of the sport. Many experts of the industry know that simulation boxing isn’t exactly the “bread and butter” of the videogame market. However, many have tried to emulate the sport in the virtual world only to come up short in graphics or fall flat on gameplay. Other cartoonish iterations have entertained the masses for a short time but lacked the depth to be a quality game. To this day, only one game has captured the hearts of the fans that love boxing for the sweet science it really is. That game is Fight Night Round 3, and this time it’s personal!

With earlier versions of either Knockout Kings or Fight Night, there has never been much of a general motive for the user to really want to hurt their opponent. Though it was always fun to see your beaten foe fall to the ground like a Raggedy Ann Doll, the emotive side to boxing wasn’t present. In Round 3, you are going to have all the motivation you could ever need to knock him out, and not just because LL Cool J and your mother said so.

In Round 3, you’ll get to watch movie highlights of your upcoming opponents, you’ll be able to see how your rivals progress through their careers, and you’ll also receive in game messages telling you when you might fight them. EA Chicago hopes that by hyping up a fight in your imminent future, the player will actually start to hate their virtual counterpart. The developer goes so far as to let you trash talk and start a fight at the weigh-in press conference. After the real bout is over, you’ll be able to save these rivalry fights and replay them later on; how cool is that!

Electronic Arts has signed 32 of the greatest fighters to ever lace it up, so you can relive some of the best fights in history. Great fights like Roberto Duran vs. Sugar Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, and Bernard Hopkins vs. Jermain Taylor highlight the rivalry mode in Round 3. Even the cover, which pictures Arturo Gatti and Mickey Ward, references how boxing’s great rivalries have, at times, elevated the sport into a greater metaphor for politics, war, and humanity.

Fight Night Round 3 focuses a little more on style this year. Though style options have been around since the days of Knockout Kings, EA Chicago has taken a larger improvement upon its relevance to how a fighter fights. The create-a-boxer utility enables players to choose differences in movement, punch style, and block style. While there are still plenty of options to choose within each of the three parameters, one has to wonder if there will be an unbalance when creating quicker or slower fighters. However, we’ve been assured that the selected styles are not restrictive to the player’s abilities; In fact, you’ll be able to switch styles and stances in order to throw off your adversary’s timing.

Critics of previous versions of Fight Night will be happy to learn that one can no longer just throw haymakers to land a victory. However, the haymaker returns along with two new Impact Punches: the Flash KO and the EA Super Punch. This time around, EA Chicago has adjusted the stamina to where any of these three Impact Punches will drastically reduce your fighter’s power. Making you a vulnerable target to the “I just got rocked” mini-game. The “I just got rocked” mini-game puts you in first-person view of the fighter after he has been hit with one of the aforementioned Impact Punches. With a hazy view of your opponent, and the now cheering crowd, you must block his upcoming blows to stay on your feet; falter and you’ll have punched a one-way ticket to slumberland.

The graphics in Fight Night Round 3 are impressive, and what EA has brought to this game is truly remarkable. From the stitching in a boxer’s shorts to the weaving of the tape around his wrists, Round 3 has everything you could ask from a boxing title. In the 360 version of Round 3, it is easy to distinguish when the faces of the fighter’s are starting to swell, sweat, and bleed during the fight. Moreover, your landed punches will have a rippling affect on your rival’s body or face that is just amazing. Even the ropes vibrate with every step that the fighters take in the ring. This attention to detail will be important for use, as there will be no heads up display (HUD) for Round 3 on the 360. You’ll have to gage when your fighters need to go on the defensive by the visual cue of his stance and the look in his eye’s.

Those looking to punish other online gamers will have to finish certain aspects of the game offline. EA Chicago has discovered that many gamers in Fight Night Round 2 looked only to take their fighter online after building up their attributes. This year in Round 3, players will have to complete certain objectives in the offline game to be successful online. You’ll also be able to form rivalries online with other players, the same as you did offline in your career mode. As this is an Electronic Arts game, expect achievements and stat tracking for online bouts.

The ability to replay rivalry bouts from your career, along with improved gameplay and online play, will hopefully give Round 3 a boost in its depth and replay value. However, we will have to wait and see what depth there is in this game as far as customizing your created boxer, the number of arenas, and game modes. As it stands right now, Fight Night Round 3 has the look of a great contender. Make LL Cool J and your mother proud, when Fight Night Round 3 hits stores in Spring 2006.
